The Heat and Collateral director was injured in the leg on Saturday, according to a report by TMZ, as he prepares to direct a prequel to his 1995 crime classic
Hollywood film-maker Michael Mann, 83, was taken to hospital on Saturday afternoon after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a gun range in Los Angeles. TMZ reported that he was trying to holster his firearm when it went off. Paramedics took him away by ambulance, with the LAPD and LAFD at the scene. His condition has not been made public.
What happened
TMZ cited a source who said the director of Heat was returning the weapon to its holster when it fired. The site said the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to it that the incident took place at The Range LA. According to the report, Mann did not shoot himself deliberately and was “injured during a training accident when he accidentally discharged a firearm into his own leg”.
Neither Mann nor his representatives have commented publicly, and there has been no update on the extent of his injury.
A career in crime cinema
Mann is a director, producer and screenwriter who has worked on major films since the 1980s. His credits include Manhunter (1986), The Last of the Mohicans (1992), Heat (1995), Ali (2001) and Collateral (2004). He has been nominated for four Academy Awards but has never won. His most recent film was Ferrari, released in 2023 and starring Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz.
The Heat prequel
He is currently working on a long-awaited prequel to Heat. In 2022 he published a 500-page novel, Heat 2, co-written with thriller author Meg Gardiner, which became a number one New York Times best-seller. Mann has adapted the book into a screenplay and will direct it, with Jerry Bruckheimer also credited as a producer.
Variety reported last month that Stephen Graham, known for the series Adolescence, had joined a cast that already includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Adam Driver, Jason Clarke and Odessa Young. Roles have not been officially confirmed. Graham is rumoured to be playing a younger version of Neil McCauley, the character Robert De Niro played in the original. Bale is reportedly lined up for LAPD detective Vincent Hanna, played by Al Pacino, and DiCaprio is expected to take on Chris Shiherlis, the role played by Val Kilmer.
