Britannia Daily is committed to accurate, responsible and transparent journalism. These Editorial Guidelines explain the standards we apply when researching, writing, editing and publishing content on britanniadaily.com and through authorised distribution and syndication partners.
Our editorial team is responsible for the content we publish and for maintaining the standards set out below. These guidelines apply to our journalists, editors, contributors and other individuals involved in the production of editorial content.
1. Accuracy and Verification
Accuracy is central to our editorial standards.
We make reasonable efforts to verify information before publication and to distinguish confirmed facts from allegations, claims, opinion and analysis.
Depending on the story, verification may include:
- checking information against reliable primary or authoritative sources;
- consulting official documents, records and statements;
- contacting relevant individuals, organisations or authorities;
- comparing information across multiple credible sources;
- checking names, dates, locations, figures, quotations and other factual details;
- clearly identifying information that has not yet been independently verified.
When information is developing or incomplete, we aim to make that clear to readers rather than presenting unconfirmed information as established fact.
We do not knowingly publish information that is false or materially misleading.
2. Sources and Attribution
We aim to identify the sources of significant factual claims wherever appropriate.
Sources may include government departments, public authorities, court documents, company statements, academic research, official records, named individuals, eyewitnesses and other credible sources.
Where information comes from another publication, news organisation, agency or third-party source, we seek to provide appropriate attribution and, where relevant, a link to the original source.
Quotations should accurately reflect what a person said or wrote. We do not knowingly alter quotations in a way that changes their meaning.
Anonymous sources may be used where there is a legitimate editorial reason to protect the source’s identity. In such cases, editors consider the reliability of the information and the source before publication.
3. Corrections and Updates
We take responsibility for correcting factual errors.
If we identify a significant error, we will correct the relevant article as soon as reasonably practicable. Where appropriate, we may add a correction or clarification explaining what was changed.
Corrections should not be hidden in a way that materially misleads readers.
Articles may also be updated when new information becomes available, particularly in developing stories. Where an update materially changes the substance of a story, we aim to make the nature of the update clear.
Readers can report potential errors or request a correction by contacting:
corrections@britanniadaily.com
All correction requests are reviewed by the editorial team.
4. Headlines and Presentation
Headlines should accurately represent the substance of the article.
We may use strong, engaging or concise headlines, particularly for breaking news, but headlines should not deliberately misrepresent an article, omit material context in a misleading manner, or make claims that are unsupported by the underlying reporting.
We do not deliberately use misleading headlines solely to generate clicks.
Images, captions, summaries and other presentation elements should also accurately represent the associated editorial content.
5. Breaking News and Developing Stories
Breaking news can develop rapidly and information may initially be incomplete.
When reporting developing events, we distinguish confirmed information from preliminary reports, allegations or information that has not yet been independently verified.
We may update an article as new facts become available. Significant developments should be incorporated promptly where appropriate.
Where an early report is subsequently shown to be inaccurate, we will seek to correct the record.
6. Opinion, Commentary and Analysis
We distinguish factual reporting from opinion, commentary and analysis.
Opinion and commentary may contain the author’s interpretation or viewpoint and should be presented in a manner that makes its nature clear to readers.
The views expressed by individual contributors do not necessarily represent the views of Britannia Daily.
We do not present opinion or speculation as established fact.
7. Allegations and Sensitive Claims
Allegations of criminal, professional or other serious wrongdoing require appropriate care.
Where allegations are reported, we aim to identify their source and provide relevant context. Where appropriate and reasonably practicable, individuals or organisations facing significant allegations should be given an opportunity to respond.
The fact that an allegation has been made does not mean that it has been proven.
We take particular care with claims that could seriously damage an individual’s or organisation’s reputation.
8. Political and Public Affairs Reporting
Britannia Daily covers politics, government and public affairs as part of its editorial coverage.
Political reporting should distinguish between factual information, statements made by political actors, analysis and opinion.
Where relevant, we seek to provide appropriate context and identify the source of political claims.
Britannia Daily does not accept payment or direction from political parties or political organisations in exchange for editorial coverage.
Any relevant political, financial or other conflict of interest should be disclosed where it could reasonably affect the reader’s understanding of the story.
9. Conflicts of Interest
Journalists and contributors should avoid situations in which personal, financial or professional interests could improperly influence editorial decisions.
Where a relevant conflict cannot reasonably be avoided, it should be disclosed to the appropriate editor and, where material to the story, to readers.
Advertising, commercial relationships and other business arrangements should not determine the factual conclusions or editorial direction of independent reporting.
10. Editorial Independence
Britannia Daily maintains a separation between editorial decision-making and commercial interests.
Advertisers, sponsors and commercial partners do not have the right to determine the editorial conclusions of independent news coverage.
Editorial decisions are made according to journalistic considerations, including public interest, relevance, accuracy and newsworthiness.
Where commercial or sponsored material appears on the site, it should be distinguishable from independent editorial reporting.
11. Sponsored, Advertorial and Commercial Content
Paid, sponsored or promotional material should not be presented to readers as independent editorial reporting.
Where applicable, sponsored or commercial content should be clearly identified through appropriate labels or disclosures.
Commercial relationships should not be concealed where disclosure is necessary for readers to understand the nature of the content.
Third-party promotional material should not be included in editorial feeds intended solely for the distribution of original editorial content.
12. Original Content and Third-Party Material
Britannia Daily aims to publish original editorial content produced by its journalists, editors and authorised contributors.
Where material from another source is used, we seek to provide appropriate attribution and ensure that its use is lawful and consistent with the applicable rights and permissions.
We do not knowingly publish or distribute copyrighted material without the necessary rights, licence or permission.
Where content is supplied by a contributor or third party, the editorial team seeks to ensure that the appropriate rights exist for the intended publication and distribution.
13. Images, Video and Other Media
We take reasonable steps to ensure that photographs, videos, graphics and other media used by Britannia Daily are obtained from lawful and appropriate sources.
Where licensing terms require attribution, we provide the required credit.
For material obtained under a third-party licence, Creative Commons licence or other usage arrangement, we seek to comply with the applicable licence conditions.
Images and other media should not be presented in a way that materially misrepresents the associated story.
14. Authors and Bylines
Editorial articles should normally identify the responsible author or contributor through an appropriate byline.
Author names should accurately identify the person responsible for the work.
We do not knowingly use fabricated authors, false biographies or misleading author information.
Where an article is produced by an editorial team or under a publication-wide editorial process, an appropriate editorial byline may be used where this accurately reflects the circumstances.
Author information should provide readers with sufficient context to understand who produced the content.
15. Use of Artificial Intelligence
Britannia Daily may use artificial intelligence tools to assist journalists and editors with certain aspects of editorial work.
This may include research assistance, organising or analysing information, working with large datasets, identifying developing information, editing, presentation, headlines or other administrative and editorial tasks.
AI-generated information is not treated as inherently accurate. Human journalists and editors remain responsible for reviewing and verifying information before publication.
We do not knowingly publish entirely AI-generated news stories without appropriate human editorial oversight.
Our separate AI Notice provides further information about how Britannia Daily uses AI in its editorial processes.
16. User-Generated and Third-Party Information
Information obtained from social media, user-generated content or other third-party platforms should be treated with appropriate caution.
The existence of a photograph, video, post or claim online does not by itself establish its authenticity or accuracy.
Where appropriate, we seek to verify the origin, date, location and context of material before presenting it as factual.
17. Privacy and Personal Information
We take care when publishing personal information.
Personal information should only be published where there is a legitimate editorial reason and where publication is proportionate to the public interest and circumstances of the story.
Particular care should be taken with sensitive personal information, private individuals and vulnerable people.
Our separate Privacy Policy explains how personal information collected through the website is handled.
18. Children and Vulnerable People
Additional care should be taken when reporting on children and vulnerable individuals.
We consider whether identifying information, photographs or other personal details are genuinely necessary for the public interest before publication.
We avoid unnecessary exposure of vulnerable individuals to harm, harassment or distress.
19. Crime and Court Reporting
Crime and court reporting should accurately reflect the status of legal proceedings.
An individual who has been accused or charged should not be described as having been convicted unless a conviction has actually occurred.
Where relevant, we distinguish between allegations, charges, convictions, acquittals and other stages of legal proceedings.
We aim to avoid language that could create a misleading impression about a person’s legal status.
20. Health and Medical Information
Health-related reporting should be handled responsibly and with appropriate sourcing.
We seek to distinguish established medical information from preliminary research, individual experiences, claims and opinion.
We do not intend general editorial coverage to constitute personalised medical advice.
Where appropriate, readers should be directed towards qualified professionals or authoritative health information.
21. Graphic, Disturbing or Sensitive Material
Britannia Daily considers the public interest and editorial relevance before publishing graphic or disturbing material.
Where particularly sensitive imagery or descriptions are necessary for a legitimate journalistic purpose, we aim to provide appropriate context and warnings where appropriate.
We do not use gratuitously graphic material simply to attract attention.
22. Social Media and Digital Publishing
Content published on social media should meet the same fundamental standards of accuracy and responsibility as content published on our website.
Social media posts, headlines and summaries should not deliberately misrepresent the underlying article.
We do not knowingly manipulate information, fabricate quotations or present unverified claims as established facts for the purpose of generating engagement.
23. Plagiarism and Attribution
Britannia Daily respects the work of other journalists and publications.
We do not knowingly present another person’s original reporting or writing as our own.
When reporting based substantially on another source, appropriate attribution should be provided, and additional original reporting or meaningful editorial value should be added where appropriate.
24. Transparency
Britannia Daily aims to provide readers with clear information about:
- who operates and owns the publication;
- its editorial leadership;
- its editorial standards;
- its corrections process;
- its funding and commercial relationships;
- its use of AI;
- its authors and contributors; and
- how readers can contact the publication.
Relevant policies and disclosures are made available through the website where appropriate.
25. Editorial Accountability
The editorial team is responsible for applying these guidelines and addressing significant concerns about published content.
Where an editorial issue is identified, the appropriate editor may review the relevant material and determine whether an update, correction, clarification, removal or other action is appropriate.
These guidelines are intended to support consistent editorial decision-making while recognising that individual stories may require different approaches depending on their circumstances.
