Porsche has updated its Taycan electric car with a virtual gear system designed to replicate the sensory experience of driving a combustion-engined performance car, as manufacturers increasingly look for ways to make electric vehicles more emotionally engaging for driving enthusiasts.
The new “e-shift” system allows drivers to switch between automatic and manual modes, using paddles on the GT steering wheel to shift through eight simulated gears. The system delivers what Porsche describes as “noticeable shift jerks” and “gear-specific drag torque” to mimic the engine-braking behaviour of a traditional car, while a virtual rev limiter provides “authentic feedback.” An interior and exterior electric sport sound adapts to driving conditions based on load and simulated engine speed, and a virtual rev counter with shift light in the instrument cluster completes the multi-sensory package.
The e-shift feature is optional across the Taycan range, with the exception of the top-spec Turbo GT, where it comes as standard. Porsche is far from alone in adding synthetic performance features to its EVs — the Hyundai Ioniq 5N and the new Honda Super-N both feature virtual gear systems and electric sport sounds. What is striking is the price range across which these features are now appearing: the Taycan starts at £88,200, the Hyundai at £65,800, and the Super-N at just £18,995, suggesting that virtual gears are moving from supercar novelty to mainstream EV feature.
The 2027 Taycan also benefits from improved range. Optional new low rolling resistance 20-inch summer tyres on rear-wheel drive models extend range by 12 miles to 434 miles on a single charge — enough, Porsche notes, to travel from London to Edinburgh without stopping.
Inside, the updated car features Porsche’s new Digital Interaction infotainment system, bringing the Taycan in line with the recently updated Macan and Cayenne EVs. The system includes freely configurable widgets, improved voice control with AI-powered Voice Pilot, better Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, 3D building representation in the navigation system and an optimised Charging Planner for long journeys. All updates will be available over-the-air.
For those at the very top of the range, a Manthey Kit is now available for the first time on an electric Porsche, offered on the 1,020bhp dual-motor Turbo GT. The kit delivers aerodynamic, chassis and powertrain optimisation for the Turbo GT with Weissach Package. The updated 2027 Taycan is available to order now.
