A pizza delivery driver in Fontana, California, calmly completed his round despite a black bear lurking just feet away in a customer’s front yard, in footage the restaurant has since turned into a viral advertisement for its delivery service.
A pizza delivery driver has earned widespread praise online after casually completing a delivery with a black bear standing just feet away in the customer’s front yard. The footage, shared by Fontana Pizza Company on Sierra Avenue in Fontana, California, shows the driver handing over the order at the front door as the bear watches on, before he calmly walks back to his car parked at the end of the driveway.
What the video shows
According to the footage, the bear was already present near the property when the driver arrived to complete the delivery; there is no indication he deliberately approached or confronted the animal. As the driver handed the pizza over to the customers at the door, the bear watched from nearby. Once the delivery was complete, the driver walked back towards his vehicle, with the bear continuing to watch him from a distance.
Rather than approaching or pursuing him, the bear appeared to realise the food was no longer in play and moved away towards a tree in the front yard. There were no reported injuries to the driver, the customers or the bear as a result of the encounter.
The restaurant’s response
Fontana Pizza Company shared the video with a text overlay reading “Our pizza delivery man really went above and beyond,” alongside the caption: “If our Delivery Driver can handle a Bear…imagine what we’ll do to satisfy your Pizza cravings.” The restaurant, a local independent business rather than a national chain, appears to have used the footage as promotional content, framing the driver’s composure during the encounter as evidence of its commitment to delivering, regardless of circumstance. The video’s viral spread has since provided the business with valuable free publicity.
An unusual encounter for the area
The incident is particularly notable given that Fontana is a heavily developed city within Southern California’s Inland Empire, rather than a remote mountain community typically associated with bear sightings. Even so, black bears are known to travel into residential areas across Southern California, particularly where food sources are available nearby.
California wildlife authorities routinely warn residents not to leave pet food, rubbish or other attractants outside, since bears that become accustomed to finding food around homes can end up repeatedly returning to populated areas. Officials also advise anyone who encounters a bear not to approach it, feed it, or attempt to take food away from it, recommending instead that people keep their distance and allow the animal a clear route to move away, much as appeared to happen in this case.
The video offers no evidence that the bear had shown any particular interest in the pizza itself; it appears simply to have watched the driver after the delivery was completed before wandering off. As it stands, there is no evidence of any bear attack or subsequent action taken against the animal, making the episode an extraordinary close encounter rather than any kind of wildlife incident.
