The case first came to public attention after neighbour Jaida Grace shared videos and photos of the dog on the Public Accountability for Animal Welfare (PAWW) Facebook page, calling on her community to hold the animal’s owners accountable. Following her post going viral, the DeSoto Police Department confirmed it was investigating the matter, though at the latest update, no one has been publicly charged or named as a suspect in connection with Rocco’s death.
What Jaida Grace said
According to Grace, she repeatedly urged her neighbours in Dallas to stop leaving Rocco outside. “I begged and begged my neighbors to stop leaving their beautiful 2-year-old Doodle puppy outside in this extreme Texas heat, chained up for 10-15 hours per day without water and shade,” she wrote. “I called Animal Control, offered to care for the dog and would’ve even taken ownership – but the neighbors declined all assistance and made every excuse for their neglect.”
Grace alleged that her neighbours ignored the dog’s barking, and that Rocco later died outside and alone in the heat. “Thankfully he’s in a better place and no longer with these evil people. My heart is still broken,” she wrote. She shared multiple photos and videos of Rocco outside in the sun, including footage that appeared to show the dog lying motionless.
Grace also shared what she said were screenshots of messages she sent to Rocco’s owners, warning them about the dangers of the heat. In one message, she wrote: “My friend’s dog passed away recently from being outside in this heat, so I just wanted to let you know. I work from home so if he ever needs water I can take some over throughout the day just let me know.” In a further message, she said she had noticed the dog outside for more than ten hours a day, and that he appeared to bark less when allowed off his leash in shaded areas.
What is confirmed versus alleged
It is important to note that many of the specific details surrounding Rocco’s death, including the exact number of hours he was left outside, whether he was denied water, and the precise cause of death, currently rest on Grace’s account and the material she shared on social media, rather than on any official police finding. DeSoto Police have acknowledged that video footage circulating online forms part of their investigation, but have not publicly confirmed every allegation made in the viral posts.
Police investigation
DeSoto Police confirmed that animal control officers responded to the property on 8 August, and that the department was aware of the video footage being shared online. Captain G Kirkland said: “The investigation is ongoing, and no further details are available at this time.”
DeSoto’s Animal Control division is responsible for enforcing laws concerning the care and treatment of animals, investigating animal-related complaints, and rescuing animals where necessary. The service operates Monday through Saturday, with emergency-only coverage on Sundays, and complaints can be submitted through the city’s Action Center.
Community petition
A petition launched on Change.org on 11 August, several days after animal control’s initial response, has since gathered more than 15,900 verified signatures, reflecting the scale of public reaction to Rocco’s death. The petition calls for Rocco’s owners to be charged with animal cruelty, stating: “As members of this community, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that such cruelty does not continue unpunished and serve as a painful reminder of the dangers our pets face from neglect.”
Organisers of the petition have accused Rocco’s owners of violating Texas law by leaving their dog in extreme heat, noting that summer temperatures in the state often exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Beyond the individual case, the petition also calls on Texas officials to introduce stricter enforcement measures, including public awareness campaigns, accessible pet-care resources, and tougher penalties for people found to have neglected animals. John Creuzot, the Dallas County District Attorney, and Jessica Trevizo, Chief of Community Prosecution & Animal Cruelty at the DA’s office, have both been named in the petition.
Wider concerns over extreme heat
The case has drawn attention beyond DeSoto because of the broader risks posed by extreme Texas summer temperatures, particularly for dogs kept tethered outdoors without the ability to reach shade or access water. While the story has now developed into a formal police investigation rather than remaining solely a social media campaign, investigators have yet to announce any charges or publicly establish the owners’ criminal liability.
