Three men were seen behind the property on Wednesday evening, and police say items were stolen. The captain’s family were not at home.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes had his family home in Cheshire burgled on Wednesday while he was in Italy for the club’s Champions League game against Como. It is understood his family were not in the house and that the intruders were inside for less than five minutes before police arrived. United were beaten 4-1 in the match. The club is understood to be supporting the 32-year-old.
What police have said
According to talkSPORT, Cheshire Police received a call at about 8.30pm on Wednesday 21 October, after a neighbour noticed suspicious activity in the rear garden of a nearby property. The caller reported seeing three unidentified men. Officers attended but the suspects had already gone. They then established that a burglary had taken place and that several items had been stolen.
Police have confirmed that items were taken, but have not published an inventory or valuation. The Sun and talkSPORT report that the burglars took designer jewellery, and that they left the family’s cars, including two Bentleys, untouched. The home, in the Nether Alderley area, is reportedly worth about £4m and has six bedrooms.
The Sun reports that the property backs onto woodland and that the suspects may have approached through the trees and crossed the rear boundary. It says the house had CCTV, electric gates and an alarm system. Police have not confirmed how the intruders got in or left, and the woodland route is a reported possibility, not a forensic finding.
A familiar pattern
Fernandes is the latest player to have his family home burgled while he was away playing. Manchester City’s Ruben Dias and his former girlfriend Maya Jama had their Cheshire home burgled in similar circumstances in January, while Dias was at City’s Champions League game against Galatasaray. Previous victims in the same area include Jack Grealish, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez.
Fernandes and United
The Portugal midfielder has been at United since joining from Sporting in January 2020. After the Como defeat, he criticised manager Michael Carrick’s tactics. He will remain captain and will not be disciplined for his comments.
