A 16-year-old girl has died after being hit by a car in Gateshead on Friday night, with a 19-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The collision occurred at around 10.40pm on Lobley Hill Road, close to the junction with Schoolhouse Lane, when the teenager was struck by a silver Ford Fiesta. Paramedics treated her at the scene before she was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where she died a short time later. Her next of kin have been informed.
The 19-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Northumbria Police confirmed it has launched a full investigation and is appealing for witnesses. In a statement, the force said: “We received a report via the ambulance service that a girl — aged 16 — had been struck by a silver Ford Fiesta. She was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries. She sadly died a short time later. We’ve launched a full investigation and a man — aged 19 — has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.”
Police are particularly keen to speak to anyone who witnessed events in the moments leading up to the collision, and have also asked those with dashcam footage from the area at the time to come forward.
The force said it was extending its “sincere condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of the teenage girl” and pledged to offer all possible support to those affected.
