A video showing a Croatian woman repeatedly punching and slamming a migrant man to the ground outside a sports shop in Zagreb has gone viral, dividing opinion online over whether the violent confrontation constituted legitimate self-defence or a brutal and disproportionate assault.
The approximately 50-second clip, filmed on a handheld device in early May, shows a physically imposing blonde woman delivering repeated blows to a smaller Asian man, forcing him against a shop window before taking him to the ground and continuing to strike him as he lies on the pavement. Throughout the footage, the man appears largely defensive — blocking punches and attempting to push her away — before crouching down as she stands over him. A small group of bystanders watches the scene unfold but does not step in. The footage begins mid-confrontation, capturing no audio of what was said beforehand.
According to reports, the woman accused the man of attempting to steal her purse, with the pair becoming entangled over what appears to be a bag during the initial confrontation. Witness accounts are conflicting, however, with some suggesting the incident may have stemmed from a misunderstanding rather than a deliberate theft attempt. Zagreb police confirmed they are investigating but said no arrests have been made — an indication that the full circumstances of what triggered the confrontation remain unresolved.
The clip spread rapidly on X, where it attracted sharply divided reactions. Many viewers cheered the woman as a local defending herself against a would-be thief, with calls for deportation featuring prominently in the replies. Others pushed back, noting that the woman’s evident physical fitness and combat ability made her the dominant aggressor throughout the footage, and questioning whether the level of force used bore any relation to the threat she actually faced. A number of users also pointed out that the man appeared to be Filipino or of Southeast Asian origin — not Indian, as had been widely and incorrectly claimed in the most viral versions of the post.
The incident has become the latest example of street footage being rapidly reframed online into a culture war flashpoint, with racial misidentification spreading faster than the facts. Zagreb police have not indicated when their investigation is expected to conclude.
