A humanoid robot dressed in a clown wig has been caught on camera kicking a young child in the stomach during a public performance in China, leaving the youngster doubled over in pain on the ground as stunned bystanders watched on.
The footage, filmed in Xinjiang in northwestern China according to local media, shows the robot — a Unitree G1 model wearing a blue clown wig — performing a routine in front of a crowd of children. The incident occurred when the droid executed a 360-degree spin that ended in a kicking motion, connecting squarely with the young boy’s stomach. The child crumples to the ground clutching his belly as the robot backs away, apparently oblivious to the harm it has caused before walking back moments later. The child was reportedly not seriously injured.
While the footage carries an undeniably absurd quality, the G1 is no toy. Weighing 32 kilograms, the compact but powerful machine is capable of generating a torque of more than 100 newton metres — giving it the capacity to deliver blows with significant force and cause genuine injury. The fact that the child emerged unhurt appears to owe more to luck than to any limitation of the machine’s physical capabilities.
The clip spread rapidly online, prompting widespread jokes about a robot uprising and countless references to science fiction scenarios involving machines turning on their human audiences. The Sun reported the incident drew significant engagement on social media, with many viewers expressing a mixture of alarm and dark humour at the sight of a clown-costumed android flooring a small child.
The incident is the latest in a string of viral moments involving humanoid robots malfunctioning in public settings. Earlier this year, footage emerged of a separate dancing robot collapsing mid-performance during a routine to Billie Jean — the machine having managed to moonwalk and nearly fall down a set of steps before eventually collapsing in a heap on stage in front of a captivated audience.
