A Pennsylvania mother of three who spent more than two decades inspiring students as an agriculture teacher has been shot dead by her husband, who later died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds in what police have described as a domestic altercation.
Taryn Morgan, 45, was found dead at her home on Carsonville Road in Halifax, Pennsylvania, at around 2pm on 21 May. Pennsylvania State Police confirmed she had died from gunshot wounds at the scene. Her husband Dennis Morgan, 46, was found nearby with self-inflicted gunshot wounds and was transported to hospital, where he died on Monday.
The couple also co-owned the Carsonville Hotel, a local venue known for hosting live music in their community.
Taryn leaves behind three children — Morgan, Carter Imhof and Kimber Morgan. Her daughter Morgan paid tribute on Facebook with a simple, heartbreaking message: “I love you, mommy.” A GoFundMe campaign started for the children had raised more than $33,000 by Wednesday. “Taryn was a devoted mother, a great teacher, a business owner, and a loving daughter,” the fundraiser stated. “She would do anything for others, always putting the needs of her family, friends, and community before her own. Her sudden loss has left a void in the hearts of her loved ones and everyone who knew her.”
The depth of that loss was evident in the outpouring of tributes from those who knew her professionally. Taryn taught agriculture at the Upper Dauphin Area Future Farmers of America and Agriculture Program and had been an educator for more than 20 years. “Mrs Morgan was more than an educator. She was a mentor, a role model, and a constant source of passion and positivity for so many students and community members,” the organisation wrote. “Her love for agriculture and her dedication to her students left a lasting impact that will never be forgotten.” To honour her memory, the programme held a plant sale on Saturday at which the entire greenhouse was emptied by community members who turned out in her honour.
Those who worked alongside her described a woman of remarkable warmth and attentiveness. “She loved her family more than anything and somehow balanced it all while still making every single person feel seen and valued,” a statement on behalf of the organisation said. “She remembered names, faces, stories. She remembered people. Her time with our program may have been short, but her impact will last forever.” Beyond teaching, Taryn was known for her love of reading, baking and landscaping, according to the Upper Dauphin Area School District.
Dennis Morgan had faced serious health challenges in recent years. In 2020 he was diagnosed with Synovial Sarcoma, a rare cancer affecting the body’s soft tissues, before being declared cancer-free in early 2021. The circumstances surrounding the events of 21 May remain under investigation by Pennsylvania State Police.
