The Mamma Mia! star and her husband have confirmed they separated ‘a while’ ago, insisting the decision has been the right one for their family.
Amanda Seyfried, 40, and Thomas Sadoski, 50, have announced the end of their nine-year marriage, revealing in a joint statement to PEOPLE on Tuesday that they have in fact been separated for some time. The couple, who share two children, said the split had proven to be the best outcome for their family unit. Despite parting ways, the pair described their continuing bond in warm terms, telling the outlet they remained committed to one another going forward.
Joint statement confirms the split
In their statement to PEOPLE, Seyfried and Sadoski said: “We have been separated for a while, and it’s proven to be the right move for us and our family unit. We’ve got each other forever – and it’s GOOD.” The actress and her husband share daughter Nina, nine, and son Thomas, five.
It remains unclear precisely when the couple began living apart. The pair were last seen together publicly on 9 January, when Sadoski accompanied Seyfried to a party at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles celebrating her Golden Globe nomination for The Testament of Ann Lee. At the time, the two appeared close as they posed together for photographs.
Amicable signs on social media
Seyfried signalled that relations between the pair remain friendly, sharing a photograph of Sadoski to her Instagram Stories on Tuesday showing him with a bearded dragon perched on his shoulder, captioned “@thomassadoski is a #reptiledad.” She followed this with a quote about resilience and forgiveness, which read in part: “Defend your heart, do whatever it takes to keep it open despite what it has been through. Forgive, not just others, but yourself, as well.” Seyfried responded to the sentiment with “Yes yes yes.” She also shared a further quote, which read: “There’s really not a difficult thing unless you decide it’s a difficult thing. Otherwise, it’s just the next thing you’re figuring out.”
Earlier this year, in an interview with Vogue, Seyfried spoke of the support Sadoski had offered her amid a demanding career, saying he “sacrifices a lot for me.” She added: “He also knows that, in this moment, the opportunities I’m being afforded are insane.”
How the couple met and married
Seyfried and Sadoski first met in 2015 while appearing together in the off-Broadway production The Way We Get By, at a time when, as Seyfried has previously said, both were in “bad relationships.” Their paths crossed again on the set of The Last Word, in which they played love interests, and the pair began a real-life relationship shortly afterwards.
The couple married in a private ceremony in Topanga, California, in March 2017, just days before the birth of their daughter. Recalling the day in a 2018 interview with Net-A-Porter’s digital magazine PorterEdit, Seyfried said: “We got married in Topanga, March last year. Just the two of us. And afterwards, I was like, ‘Can we just go to Cheebo?’ It was awesome.” She explained that, unlike many of her Hollywood contemporaries, she felt no need for an elaborate wedding, noting that she was already accustomed to dressing up for film roles. “I get married all the time,” she said. “I was in a wedding dress last week! I also go to premieres where people take my picture. I just don’t care about all that stuff.”
Seyfried, who was nine months pregnant at the time of the ceremony, also gave a practical reason for marrying before giving birth, telling PorterEdit: “I really wanted to have rings on in the hospital, you know? And what if something goes wrong, and he’s not legally my husband?”
