German police shot and wounded a 41-year-old man outside a Netto supermarket in Dresden’s Friedrichstadt district on Wednesday morning, after he allegedly opened fire on officers during a confrontation. According to reports via BILD and other outlets, the man shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the exchange of gunfire, and investigators are now working to establish his motive and background.
The incident began at around 8.20am, when officers responded to reports of an armed man near the supermarket. Police said the suspect, a 41-year-old Turkish national, was carrying what has been described as a musket-style long gun and allegedly fired at officers as they approached. Officers returned fire, wounding the man, before he was overpowered and taken into custody. Witnesses reported hearing him shout “Allahu Akbar” during the confrontation.
Suspect hospitalised, no other injuries reported
The man was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds and is not believed to be in a life-threatening condition. No police officers or members of the public were injured during the incident. As is standard procedure following any police shooting in Germany, authorities have opened investigations covering suspected firearms offences, alleged threats made during the confrontation, and the officers’ use of firearms itself.
Neighbours describe erratic behaviour
According to reports, neighbours said the man had displayed increasingly erratic behaviour in the weeks leading up to the incident, with police having previously been called out over alleged threats and disturbances involving him. Investigators are continuing to examine his background as part of the wider inquiry.
Investigation into possible extremist motive
Authorities have not yet announced a motive for the incident and are investigating whether there was any extremist element behind the confrontation. The case is being treated seriously by police, consistent with the response to previous incidents in Germany where individuals have used similar language while engaging with security forces, often prompting closer scrutiny for possible terrorism or extremism links.
