Community tensions flared in a Surrey town on Wednesday as demonstrators confronted riot police over authorities’ refusal to release suspect descriptions following the gang rape of a young woman outside a place of worship.
Surrey Police confirmed they are investigating the sexual assault of a victim in her twenties who was attacked by multiple men in the early hours of Saturday morning after departing Labyrinth nightclub in Epsom. The assault occurred outside Epsom Methodist Church on Ashley Road between 2am and 4am, approximately 100 yards from the venue.
Investigators revealed the woman was followed by several males before being subjected to the attack, though officers have declined to specify how many perpetrators were involved. East Surrey Chief Superintendent Mark Chapman stated the force lacks “sufficient information” to provide public descriptions of those responsible, urging residents to avoid speculation that could inflame community relations.
“I understand the distress and concern that this incident has caused, both for the victim herself and amongst our local communities,” Chapman said, adding that extensive enquiries have been conducted but yielded insufficient detail to release suspect characteristics.
The explanation failed to satisfy protesters who assembled Wednesday afternoon demanding transparency from investigating officers. Mobile phone footage circulated on social media captured heated exchanges between demonstrators and uniformed police, with one individual using amplification equipment to challenge the force’s communication strategy.
“They are not communicating with you, they are not telling you what is going on and that is the reason your women and your girls are scared,” the speaker told the crowd, later questioning the absence of Borough Commander Inspector Tommy Pearson from the scene.
An associate of activist Tommy Robinson, identified online as Danny Tommo, livestreamed the gathering on YouTube whilst counselling attendees against violence. “Do not give them what they want, this is a long game,” he urged before confronting an officer directly about the perpetrators’ identities.
Authorities have not confirmed whether arrests were made during the demonstration. Chapman emphasised increased patrols would continue throughout the weekend whilst investigations progress.
Police have appealed for witnesses who were near the church between 2am and 4am Saturday to contact them immediately, particularly requesting CCTV, dashcam or helmet camera recordings from the vicinity. Information can be provided by quoting reference PR/45260041426 or through the force’s online reporting system.
