Around 100 firefighters are tackling a major blaze at a property on Cazenove Road in Stamford Hill, north London, close to a yeshiva — a Jewish place of religious study — with social media footage showing thick plumes of smoke rising from the building.
The London Fire Brigade confirmed it had deployed fifteen fire engines to the scene. A spokesman said: “Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters have been called to a fire at a property on Cazenove Road in Stamford Hill. Please avoid the area as firefighters work to bring the fire under control.”
The incident has alarmed local residents, many of whom watched on as smoke billowed from the building in one of London’s most prominent Orthodox Jewish communities.
The fire comes less than 24 hours after a terror attack in Golders Green, where two Jewish men — Shloime Rand, 34, and Moshe Shine, 76 — were stabbed at a north London bus stop in an attack police have confirmed was motivated by anti-Semitism. That incident is now being treated as terrorism, and Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley described it as a “horrendous act of violence.”
The proximity of the two incidents, both involving locations central to Jewish community life in north London, has heightened anxiety among residents in the area. It is not yet known what caused the Stamford Hill fire, and no connection to the previous day’s attack has been established by authorities.
