Ed Matthews, the influencer who featured in Louis Theroux’s Inside the Manosphere, was handcuffed by police in Fort Worth for public intoxication after clashing with pub staff and Mexico fans while watching England’s World Cup last-16 victory, in footage that has since spread widely online.
British internet personality Ed Matthews, 23, was arrested in Fort Worth, Texas, on Monday while watching England’s 3-2 win over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, after being ejected from a pub and confronting supporters wearing Mexico colours. Footage of the incident, shared by Channel 5 News on Facebook, shows Matthews complaining after being thrown out of the venue during the match, before goading a man in a Mexico shirt and eventually scuffling with door staff. Videos of the arrest and its aftermath have since attracted millions of views online, sparking widespread debate over his conduct.
From the Pub to the Pavement
In the footage, Matthews can be heard telling those around him: “We’re only getting kicked out because we’re English,” to which a man in El Tri colours responds: “You can’t come in.” The confrontation escalates from there, with Matthews and his group scuffling with men at the door and warning “you’re going to get battered,” before moving on to a second pub, where they discovered police had already been called.
Despite insisting to officers that they had “done nothing wrong,” Matthews and one of his companions were handcuffed at the scene and placed in the back of a police vehicle. Footage shows the pair remaining defiant while seated on the kerb, repeatedly chanting “Mexico get battered everywhere they go” even after being detained.
A Heated Exchange With Police
A separate audio clip, shared on TikTok on Tuesday and appearing to feature Matthews arguing with officers following his arrest, captures him repeatedly demanding to know the reason for his detention. “What exactly have I been arrested for? You tell me officer,” he says, to which the officer replies: “Public intoxication.” Slurring his words, Matthews responds: “Public intoxication? Wait so we left the plub (pub), what do you expect us to do? I haven’t done anything wrong and now you’ve got me arrested for what?”
As the exchange continues, Matthews turns to insults, telling the officer: “Bald slaphead mate. You don’t even know my connects mate. And you’ve got me in the back of a car missing England game. Are you mad? You’re a bald twat mate.” The officer responds simply: “I don’t understand that slang.”
No Confirmed Charges So Far
Matthews has not publicly confirmed whether he has been charged with any criminal offence in connection with the arrest, and local authorities have not announced any further charges beyond the initial detention for public intoxication. The incident comes just months after Matthews appeared in Louis Theroux’s documentary Inside the Manosphere, in which he discussed his online persona and career as a social media personality.
