Mohamed Hany left motionless after collision before returning to pitch — only to turn ball into his own net.Egypt defender Mohamed Hany endured a torrid few minutes at the World Cup, first appearing to lose consciousness following a heavy collision, before recovering to play on and then scoring an own goal against Australia.
The frightening incident occurred in the 48th minute, as Australia worked the ball back into the box following a recycled free kick. Hany collided with Australian player Metcalfe and went down, lying motionless on his back and appearing to have lost consciousness. Medical staff sprinted onto the pitch immediately, and a stretcher was called for as concern mounted over the defender’s condition.
However, Hany was able to get back to his feet relatively quickly and left the field of play under his own power. He was assessed by the medical team on the sidelines, who determined the impact had been less severe than first feared and cleared him to continue. He duly returned to the pitch, allowing the match to resume with both teams back at full strength.
Hany appeared to have shaken off the incident almost immediately, heading clear an Australian cross from the right-hand side shortly after his return.
But his afternoon took a further turn for the worse soon afterwards, when he inadvertently diverted a set-piece delivery from the left into his own net. The mishap was Hany’s second own goal of the tournament, adding to what had already proven a difficult start to the second half for the Egyptian defender.
