A major police investigation is underway after a 20-year-old man was stabbed in Manchester’s Northern Quarter in the early hours of Sunday morning, with Greater Manchester Police appealing for witnesses as no arrests have yet been made.
Officers were called to Oldham Street at around 2.18am following reports of a stabbing. The victim was taken to hospital with injuries described as consistent with a stab wound, though Greater Manchester Police confirmed they are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing. A large police cordon was established at the junction of Oldham Street and Thomas Street as emergency services worked at the scene, according to the Manchester Evening News.
GMP said in a statement: “At around 2.18am this morning, Sunday, we were called to reports of a stabbing on Oldham Street, Manchester. Emergency services attended and a 20-year-old man was taken to hospital with injuries consistent with a stab wound. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing. No arrests have been made, and detectives continue to work at pace as they carry out diligent enquiries. Police are asking the public to please come forward with information to assist with enquiries.”
Chief Inspector Robert MacGregor said neighbourhood patrols would be increased in the area and described the incident as isolated. “This incident will understandably cause concern for the community and whilst the injuries suffered by the victim are neither life-threatening, nor life-changing, Greater Manchester Police are committed to diligently investigating all knife crime and bringing offenders to justice,” he said. “This is believed to be an isolated incident with no risk to the wider public. Neighbourhood officers will be in the area today to speak with local residents and businesses to provide reassurance.”
