Donald Trump has predicted that Sir Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister, claiming the Labour leader has “failed badly” on immigration and energy policy, in a post on his Truth Social platform.
In the message, posted on Sunday, Trump wrote: “Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. He failed badly on two very important subjects — IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well! President DJT.” The post had attracted more than 400 likes and over 100 reposts within hours of being published.

The intervention is the latest in a series of public criticisms Trump has levelled at Starmer over the UK’s approach to both immigration and North Sea oil and gas policy, issues he has repeatedly raised since returning to office. Trump has previously been vocal in urging the UK government to expand domestic oil and gas production in the North Sea rather than pursuing further restrictions on extraction, and has been critical of the government’s handling of small boat Channel crossings, which reached a record daily high for 2026 earlier this week with 710 arrivals in a single day.
Downing Street has not yet issued a formal response to Trump’s latest comments. Starmer has previously pushed back publicly against the US president’s criticism on both immigration and North Sea policy, defending the government’s approach as balancing economic, environmental and security considerations.
The remarks come at a sensitive political moment for Starmer, with speculation over his leadership intensifying following Andy Burnham’s emphatic victory in the Makerfield by-election this week, a result widely interpreted as strengthening the Greater Manchester mayor’s position as a potential challenger for the Labour leadership. Starmer has insisted he has no intention of standing aside, telling reporters this week that he “will stand” in any future leadership contest.
