Twelve people have been arrested following an investigation into a suspected threat directed at an Islamic gathering in Suffolk, which was brought to an early close as a precaution over the weekend. Counter Terrorism Policing London has said the incident at Shrubland Hall is being treated as extreme right-wing terrorism-related, after Suffolk Police acted on advice to end the event once a possible threat emerged.
The gathering at Shrubland Hall was cut short after officers assessed that there was a potential risk to those attending, prompting Suffolk Police to close the event as a precautionary measure. Counter Terrorism Policing London subsequently launched an investigation into the suspected threat, which led detectives to conclude the incident was linked to extreme right-wing terrorism. As part of that investigation, officers carried out warrants at multiple addresses, resulting in the arrest of 12 people.
Investigation focused on threat to attendees
Police said their enquiries are centred on an alleged threat that had been directed specifically at people attending the Islamic gathering. Officers are now working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, along with the motivation behind it and whether there are any wider links connected to the suspected threat.
No evidence of ongoing risk to the public
Despite the arrests, police have moved to reassure the wider community, stating there is no evidence of any ongoing risk to the public at this stage. Investigations, however, remain active as officers continue to piece together what happened.
Appeal for information
Counter Terrorism Policing has asked anyone with information, footage or other material relevant to the incident to come forward and contact officers as enquiries continue.
