Coronation Street fans have turned their suspicions firmly on Tyrone Dobbs after the beloved mechanic was caught lying to detectives investigating the murder of villain Theo Silverstone — with viewers growing increasingly convinced he knows far more about the cobbles’ biggest whodunnit than he is letting on.
Scaffolder Theo, played by James Cartwright, was killed earlier this month in a storyline that has gripped ITV viewers since Betsy Swain discovered his body on 1 May. The nasty character had spent months abusing his husband Todd Grimshaw, and several suspects have already been put in the frame — including Todd himself, Gary Windass, Danielle Silverton and George Shuttleworth. Detectives DS Lisa Connor-Swain and DC Kit Green are leading the investigation.
Summer Spellman, played by Harriet Bibby, is currently behind bars charged with the murder, despite maintaining her innocence. She had previously told DS Connor-Swain that Tyrone had seen her leave Theo’s flat that night — and crucially, that Theo was still alive when she left. It should have been the alibi that set her free. Instead, when police questioned Tyrone directly, he flatly denied seeing either Summer or Theo.
The lie has set alarm bells ringing among fans, and the episode’s closing scene only deepened the intrigue. Overheard by Tyrone as Asha Alahan, Nina Lucas and Amy Barlow expressed concern about Summer’s deteriorating mental state in prison, he was later seen making a furtive phone call. “Apparently Summer is in a right state,” he told the unknown recipient. “Yeah, that’s on us. We’re putting her through hell. No, no, we need to meet up soon. We need to talk about what happened the night Theo died.”
Viewers flooded X, formerly Twitter, with reactions. “Oh, what is Tyrone hiding,” wrote one. “Summer isn’t looking good from the current little prison. And she only wants Tyrone to stop lying, so she can be let go,” said another. Others were baffled by the logic of his deception. “Why the f**k did Tyrone say he didn’t see Summer? He wasn’t doing anything dodgy — he was literally stood outside his house,” one frustrated fan wrote. A more sympathetic viewer noted the bind Tyrone now finds himself in: “If he tells the police, Summer might be freed, but he could also incriminate himself in another incident.”
The guilt was not lost on other fans either. “Yes, Tyrone, squirm in your immense guilt for letting Summer wallow in prison for a crime she didn’t commit,” wrote one viewer. Another drew a personal parallel: “Yeah, you should feel guilty about Summer, Tyrone. Imagine Hope and Ruby in Summer’s situation.”
Elsewhere on the cobbles, the week brought further drama as grooming villain Megan Walsh made a shock return. The athletics coach, played by Beth Nixon, had been arrested after her months-long manipulation of teenage student Will Driscoll was exposed. In Monday’s episode a viral video of Megan having a milkshake thrown over her caused fresh distress for Will, who subsequently climbed onto shop scaffolding and began drinking vodka — only to be talked down by his grandmother Maggie. Later that evening, as Will put out the bins, Megan approached him in the dark. “Will, I’ve missed you!” she said, insisting they could still be friends despite his refusal. The exchange was witnessed in secret by Hope Stape, who slipped away without intervening.
