A Mexican sports journalist has been carjacked at gunpoint while broadcasting live on television, with his co-presenter watching on helplessly as the armed robbery unfolded in real time.
Fernando Vargas, a well-known figure in Mexican basketball coverage through his work with the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional, was sitting in his car on the night of 19 May in the state of Morelos, streaming live commentary for the women’s basketball play-offs, when a man in a sweater yanked open his car door and leaned inside.
The footage, which has spread rapidly online, shows Vargas breaking off mid-sentence in confusion before the attacker appears to wave a gun in his face and demand his belongings. Throughout the ordeal, the basketball match continued playing in the background on screen as Vargas’s co-presenter watched on in stunned silence from the studio.
Vargas can be heard attempting to reason with his attacker, repeatedly saying “calm down, calm down” as the robbery progressed. He also pleaded to be allowed to keep some form of identification — a request the robber refused. Forced out of his vehicle, Vargas was stripped of his phone, wallet and watch before the thief drove away in his car.
The reporter was shaken but physically unharmed. No arrests have been reported in connection with the incident.
The brazen nature of the attack — carried out in plain view of a live television audience — has drawn widespread shock and condemnation, renewing debate about the safety of journalists and public figures in Mexico, where violent crime and impunity remain serious concerns.
