Violent scenes erupted inside a betting shop during the Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday afternoon when a mass brawl broke out among racegoers, with footage of the altercation spreading rapidly across social media.
The disturbance took place while the 3.20pm Trustmarque Ultima Handicap Chase was being run at Prestbury Park, one of the most anticipated races of the opening day of the prestigious four-day meeting. Video footage posted on X showed multiple individuals throwing punches inside the bookmakers while bystanders attempted to intervene and separate those involved. The clips had been shared nearly 300 times on the platform within hours of the incident.
The scenes represented an unwelcome development at an event widely regarded as one of the highlights of the British sporting calendar, attracting tens of thousands of racegoers each year.
While disorder broke out off the course, the race itself delivered a memorable conclusion. Johnnywho, trained by the father and son partnership of Jonjo and AJ O’Neill, claimed victory under jockey Richie McLernon over the three-mile-one-furlong trip. The well-supported Jagwar, sent off at odds of 3/1, was unable to match the winner and finished as runner-up, with Quebecois taking third place.
McLernon reflected on a well-judged performance, saying: “I travelled nicely through the race, thought the ground was a little quick. Everything just unfolded for me — jumped when I needed him to and he answered every call. Absolutely thrilled.”
Trainer AJ O’Neill paid tribute to the jockey’s contribution, saying: “Absolutely fantastic. Richie gave him a great ride and he was in the right place all the time. Just great to see it all work out.” Jonjo O’Neill was equally fulsome, describing McLernon as “a great rider, a great judge and a lovely fella to be around.”
Gloucestershire Police have not yet issued a statement regarding the betting shop brawl or confirmed whether any arrests were made in connection with the incident. The Cheltenham Festival continues through the remainder of the week, with organisers yet to comment publicly on the disturbance.
