Sir Ian Cheshire has been formally confirmed as the new Chair of Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, following his pre-appointment hearing before the Science, Innovation and Technology select committee.
Sir Ian brings extensive boardroom experience to the role, having previously served as chair of Channel 4, chair of Barclays UK and chief executive of Kingfisher plc, the parent company of B&Q.
Speaking after his confirmation, Sir Ian said: “It’s a privilege to take on the role of Chair of Ofcom to drive forward our important agenda, tackling some of the most pressing issues impacting society today. Together with my fellow Board Members and Ofcom’s talented team, I look forward to working effectively with Government to serve the interests of UK citizens and consumers.”
Ofcom chief executive Dame Melanie Dawes welcomed the appointment, highlighting the scale of change facing the sectors the regulator oversees. “I’m delighted to welcome Ian to Ofcom who brings vast experience to the role at a time of significant change in the sectors we regulate. Ofcom’s job includes embracing opportunities for growth and innovation, while ensuring people across the UK are protected from online harm and continue to get the best from their communication services.”
The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for the regulator, which has been at the centre of debates over online safety enforcement, including the Government’s planned update to the Online Safety Act requiring faster removal of illegal content during periods of civil unrest. Sir Ian’s leadership will shape how Ofcom balances its growing responsibilities for policing online harms with its long-standing oversight of broadcasting and telecommunications.
