Robbie Williams sent his Instagram followers into a spin on Wednesday night as he stripped down to his pants while hunting through his wardrobe for a lucky outfit to wear while watching England take on Croatia — a match the Three Lions went on to win 4-2 in Dallas.
The former Take That star, 52, shared the clip alongside his wife Ayda, who filmed the debate from behind the camera. “I genuinely don’t know what to wear,” Williams told viewers while rifling through piles of clothes. “I need something lucky and I don’t know what that is. I don’t know whether to be jazzy because England are playing, or do I go for something comfortable for the game.”
Ayda was less than convinced by her husband’s superstitious logic. “Genuine question, do you think what you’re wearing is actually going to help the results of the game?” she asked, to which Williams replied: “As mental as that sounds it may come down to what I’m wearing.” She later captioned the video: “Is anyone else’s husband doing this right now?”
England’s eventual 4-2 victory may well have vindicated whatever Williams settled on. The Rock DJ star’s connection to English football runs deeper than lucky outfits, however. The Stoke-on-Trent native is a lifelong Port Vale supporter and has recently deepened his ties to the League Two club by sponsoring their home and away shirts for the next two seasons, with his official logo featuring prominently on the black and white strip. He has been Honorary President of the club since 2024 and has now also been named an ambassador for the Port Vale Foundation, following in the footsteps of Ed Sheeran, who sponsors his boyhood club Ipswich Town.
“It feels pretty incredible, to be honest,” Williams said of the shirt deal. “Robbie Williams, on the front of a Port Vale shirt. It’s a match made in heaven, for me. I started going to the Vale when it was 50p for a junior supporter to get in. It takes a village to raise a child, and the Railway Paddock at Vale Park raised me.”
Port Vale chief executive Matt Hancock described the partnership as genuinely meaningful. “He is not only a global superstar, but also a genuine supporter of the club with a deep and personal connection to our town. It’s that authenticity which makes this so powerful,” he said.
