ITV World Cup pundit Lucy Ward has paid an emotional tribute to her partner Neil Redfearn after revealing the former footballer saved her mother’s life while she was thousands of miles away working on coverage of the tournament in the United States.
Ward, 52, has been working as a co-commentator and analyst for ITV throughout the World Cup, travelling across Mexico, Canada and the USA to cover matches. While she has been away, Redfearn, a former Premier League footballer, has been at home in the UK keeping a close eye on her mother. Last Friday, that responsibility proved critical when her mother’s health suddenly deteriorated.
Taking to her Instagram Stories, Ward expressed her gratitude in a heartfelt tribute. “This one saved my Mum’s life on Friday whilst I was away at the World Cup. What a man, forever grateful for you,” she wrote. The exact nature of Redfearn’s intervention has not been disclosed, though Ward confirmed her mother was taken to hospital. In a follow-up post she added: “Mum is fine and back home from the hospital. All good. Sometimes life comes at you fast. What a man.”
Ward posted the tribute on Tuesday night while preparing to work on the Mexico vs Ecuador round of 32 tie at the Azteca Stadium alongside lead commentator Joe Speight.
Redfearn, 61, is a well-known figure in English football. A midfielder who played over 800 games in a professional career spanning from 1982 to 2006, he represented a string of clubs including Barnsley — where he spent the bulk of his career — as well as Bolton, Crystal Palace, Watford, Bradford, Oldham, Charlton, Wigan and others, before finally retiring at non-league Scarborough. He went on to manage Leeds United on a caretaker and permanent basis on four separate occasions between 2012 and 2015, had a stint at Rotherham United, and later moved into women’s football, coaching Doncaster Belles, Liverpool Women and Sheffield United Women. His most recent role was at Farsley Celtic, which was liquidated in 2025 before reforming as FC Farsley.
Ward and Redfearn met while both working at Leeds United, where Ward served as head of education and welfare after retiring from a playing career that included spells at Leeds and Doncaster. In that role she worked with players including James Milner, Aaron Lennon, Fabian Delph and Kalvin Phillips during their academy days. In 2023 Ward revealed she had been forced out of the role after Redfearn was sacked as manager, and successfully pursued a sex discrimination case against former owner Massimo Cellino, being awarded £290,000 in compensation.
Ward has since built one of the most respected broadcasting careers in the game, working across ITV, TNT Sports, Sky, the BBC, Amazon Prime, the Premier League and the Champions League. The Guardian named her among the top broadcasters of 2024-25. Redfearn has not publicly responded to Ward’s praise, but the episode appears to have deepened an already close bond between the couple.
