Former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has emerged as a leading candidate to become the next manager of AC Milan, with conversations already taking place between the club and his representatives despite no agreement yet being in place.
The 41-year-old Portuguese has been without a club since being sacked by United in January following a difficult 14-month spell in charge, as reported by the BBC. Sources close to Amorim had previously played down the possibility of a return to Benfica, the club where he spent six years as a player and made 154 appearances, suggesting his focus now lies elsewhere.
Milan are searching for a successor to Massimiliano Allegri, who was dismissed in May after the club failed to qualify for the Champions League. Milan had appeared well placed for a top-four finish, sitting nine points clear of fifth place after beating rivals Inter in March, but won just three of their final ten league games, picking up only ten points as they ultimately finished a single point behind Como, who claimed the final Champions League spot on the last day of the season.
Amorim is understood to be high on Milan’s shortlist, though he faces competition from other candidates. USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino has also been linked with the role, as has Oliver Glasner, who left Crystal Palace following their UEFA Conference League final victory over Rayo Vallecano. Another former United manager previously linked with the Milan job, Ralf Rangnick, is no longer in contention after extending his contract as Austria head coach through to 2028.
Should Amorim take charge at Milan, he would face his former club in pre-season, with the Italian side set to play Manchester United in Wroclaw, Poland on 15 August, a week before the new Premier League season begins.
