Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank have announced that their newborn daughter, born in Lisbon two weeks ago, has been named Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank, making her the first of the couple’s children to be born outside the UK.
Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank have revealed the name of their third child, born two weeks ago. Taking to Instagram, Eugenie announced that the couple’s newborn daughter would be named Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. In her post, Eugenie explained the significance behind the choice, writing that Adelaide had been “named after three people we love and admire past and present, including her Great-Grandmother who we hold close in our hearts. Her name is part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home.” She added: “Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers.”
The meaning behind Adelaide’s name
According to the announcement, the name Adelaide is thought to be partly inspired by Queen Adelaide, who was married to William IV, while Elizabeth serves as a tribute to Eugenie’s late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. The choice continues a pattern already established by the couple with their previous children: their son Ernest’s middle names, George and Ronnie, similarly honour members of both Jack and Eugenie’s families.
Details of Adelaide’s birth
Adelaide was born on 3 August at 6.20pm in Lisbon, Portugal, weighing a reported 6lb 9oz (2.98kg). Her birth in Portugal makes her the first of Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank’s children to be born outside the UK, reflecting the family’s close ties to the country. Eugenie and Jack split their time between Britain and Portugal, with Jack’s professional activities forming part of the reason for the family’s ongoing connection there.
By contrast, the couple’s first two children were both born at the Portland Hospital in London: their son August, born in February 2021, and their second son, Ernest, born in May 2023. Adelaide is the couple’s first daughter, following the births of her two older brothers.
Adelaide’s place in the Royal Family
Adelaide is 15th in line to the British throne, with other members of the Royal Family each moving down one position in the line of succession following her birth. She does not hold an HRH title, as Eugenie’s children are not automatically entitled to the style of Prince or Princess under the rules established by the 1917 Letters Patent.
Adelaide is also the 15th great-grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and is Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s fifth grandchild, following Princess Beatrice’s daughter, Athena Mapelli Mozzi.
