Mayor Ihor Terekhov said three strikes hit a district of Ukraine’s second-largest city, damaging a high-rise block and private homes. A separate drone strike in Pavlohrad killed one person and wounded 10, according to the regional governor.
Russian forces struck Kharkiv on Monday, killing two people and injuring four, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said on Telegram. He said three strikes hit one city district and damaged a high-rise apartment block and private homes. Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov said Russian forces had launched missiles at the city, which lies about 30km (18 miles) from the Russian border and is a frequent target. In the neighbouring Dnipropetrovsk region, a drone strike on Pavlohrad killed one person and wounded 10, Governor Oleksandr Hanzha said.
What happened in Kharkiv
The research notes say the strikes hit the Novobavarskyi district. Mr Syniehubov confirmed that one of the injured is a 17-year-old girl, according to Ukrainska Pravda. The other three injured were two men aged 61 and 77 and a woman aged 60, Kyiv Post reports, and all four received medical help. The identities and ages of the two people killed have not been established.
According to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, as reported by Kyiv Post:
- four apartment buildings and four private houses were damaged
- a kindergarten building was damaged
- ten garages were damaged, with vehicles catching fire near the impact sites
- two fires broke out, affecting a non-residential building and several cars
Other Ukrainian reporting suggests five strikes, with two more in the Kholodnohirskyi district, and a major fire at one Novobavarskyi site. Casualty totals relate to Novobavarskyi, and no separate figures for Kholodnohirskyi have been established.
The weapon has not been independently confirmed. Mr Syniehubov described missiles, while the State Emergency Service identified multiple-launch rocket systems, according to Kyiv Post. It is safer to describe them as Russian strikes.
Pavlohrad
Mr Hanzha said Russian forces had launched more than 50 drone and artillery attacks across the Dnipropetrovsk region. In Pavlohrad, one person was killed and 10 wounded, three of them seriously. Reporting varied as figures were updated. Regional authorities first said at least three were hurt, the State Emergency Service later said seven, and Reuters reported 10. The notes say two of the injured were 10-year-old girls, according to Ukrainska Pravda.
A car caught fire, and several multistorey residential buildings and a shop were damaged, per Interfax-Ukraine. It has not been established whether the person killed was in the vehicle.
The wider picture
Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 140 drones overnight, with 112 shot down or suppressed, plus four missiles: three Kh-59/69 guided missiles, all reported intercepted, and one Kh-31P anti-radiation missile. Strikes were recorded at 15 locations, with debris falling at four more. Those overnight figures do not necessarily relate to the strikes on Kharkiv in the evening.
Elsewhere on Monday, according to hromadske:
- Zaporizhzhia: Four people were injured in overnight attacks, including women aged 22 and 30 and men aged 40 and 61.
- Chernihiv region: Two people were injured, and a business hangar, grain store and warehouse caught fire.
- Izium, Kharkiv region: Three people were injured by guided aerial bombs, which damaged homes and a children’s sports school.
Twelve-year-old Artem Koval died in a Kyiv hospital on 26 October from injuries sustained in a Russian drone strike on Nova Vodolaha’s central park on 19 October, The Kyiv Independent reports. His eight-year-old sister, Arina, was killed in the original attack. The toll from that incident is now six, including three children. Ukrainian prosecutors have opened a war crimes investigation. That is a separate incident.
The regional military administration said that in the previous week Kharkiv region saw 113 settlements attacked, 12 people killed and 148 injured, including 11 children.
