A British woman has died after being stabbed at a family hotel in Albufeira, Portugal, with her partner arrested at the scene and her young child taken to hospital, though Portuguese authorities have yet to officially confirm several of the most disturbing details reported in the aftermath.

Portuguese emergency services received the alert at approximately 6.42pm on Tuesday, 1 September, reporting a serious bladed-weapon assault at the family-friendly resort. The GNR police force, Albufeira firefighters and INEM medical responders attended, but the woman had already died by the time they arrived. Her partner was reportedly still at the hotel when officers arrived, and was detained at the scene while covered in blood.
What has been confirmed
Portuguese police have confirmed that both the victim and her partner are British nationals, with both reported to be aged 34, though authorities have not released their names or said which part of the UK they are from. The GNR has since handed the homicide investigation to Portugal’s Polícia Judiciária (PJ), whose forensic investigators carried out multiple examinations of the hotel, including photographing and documenting blood evidence found in the corridor and accommodation area of the resort.
It is important to note that several of the most disturbing details reported in the aftermath of the killing, including the alleged use of scissors as the weapon, the claim that the attack took place in front of the couple’s child, and the precise sequence of the assault, remain media-reported details rather than findings officially confirmed by Portuguese investigators at this stage.
The couple’s child
The presence of the couple’s young child at the hotel has been confirmed by multiple reports, though Portuguese authorities have not publicly confirmed claims that the four-year-old witnessed the attack. The child was taken to Faro Hospital, where he remained as of Tuesday, with a reported leg injury that has not been officially explained; it remains unclear from available information whether the injury occurred during the violence or under separate circumstances.
Because the child is a minor, a Family and Juvenile Court is expected to determine his longer-term care arrangements. Relatives of the family have reportedly been informed of events and were expected to travel to the Algarve.
What happens next
The suspect remained in police custody as the investigation continued, with no date yet announced for his first court hearing. Under Portuguese law, police have a maximum of 48 hours to hand a suspect over to the courts, meaning his first judicial interrogation is expected to take place before a judge at nearby Portimão Court within that timeframe. The judge will decide whether he is remanded in custody while the homicide investigation continues.
Portuguese authorities have not announced a motive for the killing. While the victim and suspect are being described as partners, investigators have not publicly established what triggered the violence. No formal statement providing the identities of either the victim or suspect, a motive, or the precise circumstances of the stabbing had been released by Portuguese investigators at the time of the latest available information.
Where the attack took place
The incident occurred at the Alfagar Alto da Colina complex in the Balaia area of Albufeira, a large, family-oriented tourist resort comprising 174 apartments across two buildings. The resort describes itself online as offering “striking sea views” and being “the ideal accommodation for families and couples looking for unparalleled services and facilities in Albufeira, within walking distance to the beach.” Its website states that “couples and families with children will find a wide range of leisure activities such as water slides for children, 4 swimming pools and an indoor pool, football facilities, tennis court, basketball, gym, as well as a playground and a variety of bars and restaurants designed to meet all tastes,” adding that guests can also access the wider Alfagar Resort’s additional swimming pools, sports facilities and outdoor activities.
A separate recent incident in the area
The killing comes just days after a separate, unrelated incident in Albufeira. Last Tuesday, a driver reported to be drunk was arrested after allegedly driving into several pedestrians on the packed Oura party strip while attempting to flee police who were trying to stop his vehicle. Among those injured was Polish-born Irish national Maja Lewecka, 18, along with a Spanish tourist and two police officers.
