Austrian authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal railway crossing collision that claimed the life of a former international footballer who represented some of Europe’s most prestigious clubs during a career spanning two decades.
Alexander Manninger, a retired goalkeeper who earned 33 caps for Austria and featured for Arsenal during their late-1990s golden era, was killed when his Volkswagen minivan collided with a regional train at an unguarded crossing near Nußdorf am Haunsberg in the Salzburg region on Wednesday morning.
Emergency services attended the scene at approximately 8:20am after the vehicle was struck and dragged several metres along the track. Manninger, 48, was the sole occupant of the minivan at the time of the incident.
The former shot-stopper hung up his gloves in 2017 following a distinguished playing career that saw him turn out for some of Italian football’s giants, including spells at Juventus Turin and AC Fiorentina. He also enjoyed a brief period with Liverpool towards the latter stages of his career.
Manninger is perhaps best remembered in England for his time at Arsenal, where he served as understudy during a period of significant success for the north London club. His appearances came during an era when the Gunners established themselves as Premier League title contenders under Arsène Wenger’s management.
The Austrian international’s career trajectory took him across multiple European leagues, demonstrating the versatility and professionalism that enabled him to maintain top-level employment well into his thirties before eventually retiring from professional football.
