Brenda Fricker, the Irish actress celebrated for her Oscar-winning role in My Left Foot and her turn as the Pigeon Lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, has died at the age of 81. Her death was confirmed by her agent, prompting tributes from across the film industry in recognition of a career spanning more than six decades.
Fricker made history in 1989 when she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in My Left Foot, becoming the first Irish actress ever to win an Oscar. Earlier this year, Dublin City Council had approved plans to award her the Freedom of the City of Dublin, one of Ireland’s highest civic honours, in recognition of her lasting contribution to film and Irish culture.
A career of memorable roles
Alongside her Oscar-winning turn, Fricker became a familiar face to audiences worldwide for playing the Pigeon Lady opposite Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, one of the most beloved performances of her career. Her wider filmography included roles in The Field, A Time to Kill, Angels in the Outfield, So I Married an Axe Murderer, Veronica Guerin, Inside I’m Dancing and Albert Nobbs.
Before establishing herself in major film roles, Fricker built a strong reputation with UK audiences through her work on British television, most notably playing nurse Megan Roach in Casualty. In 2008, she was honoured with the inaugural Maureen O’Hara Award at the Kerry Film Festival, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Irish film.
Reflections on later life
In a rare interview last year, Fricker spoke candidly about her declining health and the chronic pain she had experienced after largely stepping away from acting, revealing that she spent much of her time confined to bed during that period.
