Greater Manchester Police have launched an urgent manhunt for Marwan Jumaa, 20, after he escaped custody while being transported from a secure hospital facility to North Manchester General Hospital for medical treatment. Jumaa, who was sentenced last year for an assault on two women following an investigation by the Metropolitan Police, is considered a risk to both himself and members of the public.
Police sources said Jumaa’s sentence had been split between prison and hospital for treatment, though it is not known what condition he was being treated for at either the secure facility or North Manchester General Hospital. He absconded while under escort during the transfer between the two locations, prompting Greater Manchester Police to launch a search for him.
Where he may be
Officers believe Jumaa has links to the Bury, Prestwich and Crumpsall areas of Greater Manchester, as well as connections to Leeds in West Yorkshire and London, and are focusing their enquiries across these areas as the search continues.
Police urge caution
Detective Chief Inspector Abigail Cronin, from Greater Manchester Police, appealed directly for public assistance in locating him. “We are urging anybody to come forward who may have information about Marwan’s whereabouts,” she said. “I recognise that this may heighten concern within the community. However, I want to assure you that we have officers working around the clock to find Marwan and return him to hospital as soon as possible. If sighted, do not approach him, please call 999 immediately, quoting log number 3544 of 14/07/2026.”
Greater Manchester Police reiterated this warning in its own public appeal, stating: “If you see him, do not approach him – please call 999 immediately quoting log number 3544 of 14/07/2026. Anybody with information regarding the whereabouts of Jumaa is asked to contact police on 101 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
Background to the case
Jumaa was sentenced at Bromley Magistrates’ Court last year over the assault on two women, following an investigation led by the Metropolitan Police. The Home Office has been approached for comment on the circumstances surrounding his escape.
