Australia’s most prolific convicted paedophile has lost his bid to have his 27-year minimum sentence reduced, with the Queensland Court of Appeal dismissing his claim that the term was “manifestly excessive” — clearing the way for him to face a fresh wave of charges in New South Wales.
Ashley Paul Griffith, a 48-year-old former childcare worker, pleaded guilty in 2024 to 307 child sex offences against 65 victims aged between one and nine, including 28 counts of rape against girls mainly aged three to five at Queensland childcare centres between 2007 and 2022. He received a life sentence with a non-parole period of 27 years.
His lawyers argued in May that while a life sentence was appropriate, the minimum term imposed effectively constituted harsher punishment than comparable cases of extreme child sex offending. On Friday, Justice David Boddice delivered the Court of Appeal’s decision during a brief sitting in Brisbane, stating simply: “The appeal against sentence is refused.” One of Griffith’s victims and her family were present in court to hear the outcome.
During the May hearing, barrister Sarah Cartledge had told the panel of three Justices that Griffith’s crimes were “truly awful” and that he had preyed upon “the most vulnerable” while in a position of trust. She noted that Griffith had cooperated fully and openly with investigators since his arrest, giving around 18 hours of interviews. “His extensive cooperation and guilty plea saved an enormous amount of court time and spared child complainants from giving evidence,” she said.
Prosecutors urged the Justices to reject the appeal, arguing the sentence barely reflected the scale and cruelty of Griffith’s offending. Over two decades of abuse, Griffith filmed all but one of his victims, building a vast cache of material that he shared online. When detectives raided his Gold Coast home in 2022, they seized more than 4,000 child abuse images and videos documenting much of his offending.
With the Queensland appeal now concluded, Griffith faces further court proceedings in New South Wales, where he is accused of committing 180 additional sex offences against more than 20 children.
