Joe Weller, one of Britain’s most recognisable YouTubers with more than 5.3 million subscribers, has announced he has become a Christian — describing his faith as the answer to years of searching for fulfilment through fame, money and travel that left him feeling empty.
The 30-year-old shared the announcement in an emotional Instagram video filmed in his car on Sunday, speaking candidly about the journey that led him to faith. “I have been saved by the Lord Jesus Christ, and it is the best thing that’s ever happened to me,” he told his followers. “I thought it was a load of nonsense. But when it makes sense, it really does make sense.”
Weller has built his career since 2012 on comedy content, physical challenges and adventures — including surviving nine days in the Amazon rainforest and camping for three days without food — but he said no level of external success had ever delivered lasting peace. “I have tried everything — everything to feel genuinely fulfilled and at peace. Work, diet, travel, fame, money. I tried everything that seemed like it could work for me.” He described hitting rock bottom before finding faith. “He never gave up on me. When I was at rock bottom, and the only place I could turn was to Him… I am so, so grateful that he never gave up on me. He has transformed me. He has renewed my mind. He is the truth, the life, the way that we are all searching for.”
The announcement was not entirely without context. Over the past year, Weller had discussed spirituality in podcast appearances, including a conversation with philosopher and YouTuber Alex O’Connor — known as CosmicSkeptic — in which he spoke about surrendering to God and searching for deeper purpose. Followers had also noticed he quietly updated his Instagram biography to identify himself as a follower of Jesus Christ.
Reactions online were divided. Fellow YouTubers KSI and Niko offered immediate support with heart emojis, while Christian football page Ballers In God wrote: “What an incredible testimony. All glory to God for His faithfulness and the way He continues to transform lives.” Others were more sceptical, questioning the sincerity of the change or expressing concern given Weller’s previously documented struggles with anxiety, depression and burnout.
Weller, however, appeared unbothered by the mixed reception, stating clearly that he feels better than he has in years.
