A shocking daylight brawl outside a busy Wetherspoons pub in southeast London has been caught on camera, showing four women punching, kicking and pulling each other’s hair before three of them collapsed to the pavement in a heap.
The fight broke out outside The Watch House on Lewisham High Street on 21 May, as temperatures reached 23C and pub gardens across the country filled with Bank Holiday drinkers soaking up the sunshine. Among those caught up in the chaos was a woman clutching a small dog on a lead as the confrontation escalated around her.
Footage of the incident, shows two women at the centre of the altercation exchanging punches and grabbing each other’s hair while others attempted to intervene. Those efforts proved unsuccessful, and the situation deteriorated further when three of the women fell to the ground together. One, wearing leggings, eventually picked herself up and walked calmly back to her seat outside the pub as stunned onlookers watched. Other pub-goers later stepped in to separate the group.
A Wetherspoons spokesperson said: “An incident took place outside the pub following a disagreement inside. We will assist the police with their investigation.”
The footage drew a wry response online, with many viewers treating the scenes as an entirely predictable consequence of warm weather and cheap drinks. “Ah a punch up at Spoons, as traditionally English as fish and chips,” wrote one. “Bit of sun and a few Babychams,” added another. Others were more succinct: “A little warm weather and alcohol.” One viewer, however, reserved their sympathy entirely for the animal caught in the middle of it all. “That poor dog,” they wrote.
