A North African asylum seeker described by police as a known repeat offender has died after plunging from the 17th floor of a building in Germany while attempting to flee officers who had cornered him following a knife attack on an Italian woman.
The incident, which has circulated widely on social media, saw police respond to reports of the stabbing before tracking the suspect to the high-rise building. As officers closed in, the man attempted to escape by climbing or jumping from the 17th floor and fell to his death. The condition of the Italian woman victim has not been confirmed at the time of publication.
German authorities have not released the identity of the suspect or the precise location of the incident. He is reported to have been known to police as a repeat offender prior to the attack.
The incident has reignited debate in Germany about asylum policy, repeat offending and the persistent difficulties authorities face in deporting foreign nationals with criminal records. Germany has seen a series of high-profile knife attacks involving asylum seekers in recent years — most notably the Solingen festival attack in 2024, in which a Syrian national whose asylum application had been rejected killed three people. German federal crime statistics have consistently shown overrepresentation of non-citizens in certain violent offence categories, a pattern that opposition parties, particularly the AfD, have repeatedly highlighted in parliamentary debates.
The suspect’s death brings any potential prosecution to an end. German police were approached for comment.
