A Labour mayor has been jailed for three years after helping her son conceal evidence when police arrived to arrest him for the rape of an unconscious 15-year-old girl he had filmed and then used to threaten her into silence.
Naheed Ejaz, 61, former Mayor of Bracknell Forest, delayed officers from entering the family home in the early hours of the morning and spoke to her son Diwan Khan in Urdu — out of earshot of police — to help him hide the mobile phone containing video footage of the attack. Sentencing her at Winchester Crown Court, His Honour Judge Rufus Taylor said she had allowed her “mother’s love for a son to stretch to criminality” and warned that because of her actions, “there was a real risk Khan might have avoided prosecution for the rape of an unconscious child.”
Her son Khan, 41, who had served as Consort of the Mayor, was separately jailed for 12 years after being found guilty of rape. He had raped the teenager in June 2024 after spiking her vodka with MDMA. She regained consciousness in the back seat of his car with no clothing on and no memory of what had happened. Khan then showed her a video he had filmed of himself raping her, during which he could also be seen choking and slapping her. He told her the recording would be sent to her mother if she spoke out, told her she “belonged” to him and threatened to “come to her house and slit her throat” if she reported the attack.
In her police interview, the girl said she had not consented to sex and that watching the footage made her feel “sick” and “scared.” In a victim impact statement, she described the devastating impact on her life — missing significant amounts of school, failing her GCSEs and, in June 2025, attempting to take her own life. “I just wanted to end my life so the pain would go away,” she said.
When officers arrived at the family home in Bracknell on 12 September 2024 to arrest Khan, Ejaz delayed opening the door for a considerable period. Prosecutor Ed Wylde told the court she had then communicated with her son in Urdu to assist him in concealing his phone — the device believed to contain the video evidence. Khan did eventually hand over a phone to police, but it was not the one with the footage on it. Wylde said the prosecution believed Ejaz was aware the wrong phone had been handed over. “A mother’s love for her son will stretch some way, and in this case it stretched into criminality,” he said.
Ejaz served as Mayor of Bracknell Forest in 2023 and is understood to have stepped down from her role in September 2024. Khan will serve eight years before he can be considered for parole and is subject to a 20-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order, an indefinite restraining order against the victim and a lifelong requirement to remain on the sex offenders register. He received a concurrent three-year sentence for perverting the course of justice.
