Travel data provider Inrix reported that departing flights were facing average delays of around 50 minutes as a result, and advised passengers to check their flight status before travelling to the airport. An airport spokesperson told the Manchester Evening News that the closure had been carried out to allow “routine maintenance” to take place, though some reports have referred to a “hole in the runway” as the cause of the disruption.
What caused the delays
According to Inrix, real-time flight data showed departures from Manchester Airport running an average of fifty minutes behind schedule as the disruption built through the day. The airport operates two runways, meaning the temporary closure of one did not halt operations entirely, but it significantly reduced available capacity, particularly during periods of heavy traffic. Flight-tracking data indicated that the resulting delays were not confined to a single flight, with numerous departures affected and some cancellations reported. Disruption of this kind can spread rapidly once runway capacity is reduced, as knock-on effects to aircraft, crews and airport slots can carry through to later flights operated by the same aircraft.
Cause of closure not fully confirmed
While reports have attributed the disruption to a “hole in the runway,” this description appears to stem from traffic-data reporting rather than an official statement from the airport itself. Manchester Airport has described the closure only as being for “routine maintenance,” and has not publicly confirmed that a hole in the runway surface was responsible for the disruption.
Separate from recent air traffic control failure
The disruption comes just days after NATS, the UK’s air traffic control provider, confirmed that a major nationwide outage on 8 September had been caused by a software defect in its flight-data system. That earlier incident led to more than 2,000 flight cancellations and widespread delays across the UK. NATS has said the Manchester runway issue is unrelated to that software failure, indicating that Saturday’s disruption was a separate, localised operational problem rather than a further sign of nationwide air traffic control difficulties.
Scale of Manchester’s operations
Manchester Airport handles hundreds of aircraft movements daily and serves more than 200 destinations, making it one of the UK’s busiest airports. Given this volume of traffic, the temporary loss of a single runway can have a disproportionately large impact during busy periods, as there is limited spare capacity to absorb resulting delays.
