Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, shot and killed his wife Amanda and their six children before setting fire to their Grand Haven Township home and turning the gun on himself, in what Ottawa County authorities have ruled a murder-suicide, just weeks after he lost his job.
A Michigan father shot and killed his wife and six children before setting their family home ablaze and taking his own life, authorities have confirmed. Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, killed Amanda, 39, and their six children, aged five to 15, inside their $750,000 home in Grand Haven Township on Friday, before starting fires at multiple points inside the property and turning the gun on himself. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office has ruled the deaths of Amanda and the children a homicide, and Kristopher’s death a suicide.
How the fire was discovered
Emergency dispatch audio has since emerged detailing the moment fire crews were alerted to the blaze. “We’re given a 10-7 for a residential fire at 14936 Riverside Trail. White smoke coming out of the window,” a fire dispatcher said, adding: “Full of smoke seen from the outside and smells electrical.” A crew confirmed they were responding within 40 seconds.
Investigators believe the fire was deliberately started in multiple locations inside the home following the shootings, though the precise origin remains under investigation by Michigan State Police arson investigators. Authorities believe the killings likely took place during the night or in the early hours, before smoke from the fire was first reported by neighbours. The family’s pets also died after inhaling smoke.
Lost his job weeks before the killings
It has since emerged that Karolkiewicz had lost his job earlier in the month. He had worked remotely as National Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the American Heart Association since September 2023. The organisation confirmed his employment had ended earlier this month but did not disclose the reason for his departure.
The children
Of the six children killed, four were Kristopher’s biological children and two had been adopted by the couple. Police confirmed four were boys, aged 15, 12, 11 and five, while their daughters were 11 years old. None of the children has been formally named by authorities.
Investigation ongoing
Authorities have said there is no indication of any other suspects, and the investigation to date indicates Karolkiewicz acted alone. No motive for the killings has been officially identified, and the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says its investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to review evidence recovered from the scene.
Remembered by her school community
Amanda was remembered by Grand Haven Area Public Schools as a compassionate substitute teacher and paraprofessional who made a lasting impact on both students and colleagues during her time working in the district.
