The attack took place in the city’s 17th arrondissement, close to the busy transport hub serving Metro, RER and tram services. Police said the victims were treated by emergency services at the scene before being transported to hospital, with one described as being in critical condition. A 31-year-old man believed to have mental health issues was arrested at the scene, having been armed with two knives, according to local media reports.
How the attack unfolded
The three women were attacked in the same area within a short period of time. Officers already stationed nearby overpowered and arrested the suspect within minutes of the attack, a rapid response that authorities believe helped prevent further injuries. Emergency services treated the victims at the scene before taking them to hospital.
Investigation and police response
Police established a security cordon around the scene while forensic officers examined the area and recovered the two knives allegedly used in the attack. French authorities have opened a criminal inquiry for attempted murder, and the suspect is expected to undergo a psychiatric assessment as part of the investigation.
Officials have ruled out terrorism as a motive at this stage, with the inquiry instead focusing on the suspect’s reported mental health issues. Authorities have not yet released the identities of either the victims or the suspect as the investigation continues.
