A 22-year-old man has died and four others were hospitalised following a stabbing in Clapham this morning, with six men now arrested on suspicion of murder as detectives work to establish what happened.
Six men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 22-year-old man was stabbed to death in Clapham, south London, this morning. Police were called at 4.37am to reports that a man had suffered a stab wound; he later died as a result of his injuries. Four other men were also taken to hospital with stab wounds, though their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing. The Metropolitan Police said the stabbing is believed to have taken place around Tremadoc Road and Clapham High Street, where a crime scene remains in place while forensic officers examine the area and gather evidence.
Those arrested
All four of the injured men, three aged 22 and one aged 24, are among those who have been arrested. Two further men, aged 27 and 23, were also arrested at the hospital. All six remain in police custody while detectives continue questioning them and gathering forensic evidence.
The investigation so far
Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Lee, who is leading the investigation, said the victim was stabbed at around 4.20am near Tremadoc Road. “Our enquiries are progressing quickly, and we understand that the victim was stabbed at around 4.20am close to Tremadoc Road in Clapham,” she said. “Those in the area will continue to notice an increased police presence throughout the day as these enquiries continue. Officers have arrested six men on suspicion of murder and we are working quickly to establish what has happened.”
Police believe those involved in the incident were known to one another, and investigators are not currently treating it as a random attack. Detectives are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby businesses, residential properties and Transport for London cameras in an effort to trace the movements of those involved before and after the stabbing. A post-mortem examination is expected to take place to establish the precise cause of death.
Support for the victim’s family
The victim has not yet been formally named, though the Metropolitan Police confirmed his next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Superintendent Mark Gallacher said: “This is a tragic incident and our officers continue to support the family of the young man who has sadly died. We understand that this will cause concern among the local community and specialist detectives are doing everything possible to determine what has happened. We are asking anyone with any information or anyone who may have witnessed anything in the early hours to contact us and support with the ongoing investigation.”
Appeal for information
Police are appealing for dashcam, doorbell and mobile phone footage from anyone who was in the area between 4am and 5am that could assist the investigation. Extra neighbourhood officers have also been deployed to the Clapham area to reassure local residents and support the ongoing inquiry.
