Police have arrested a 28-year-old man after a teenage girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in the kitchen aisle of an Asda store in Wakefield, with a female shopper said to have intervened and confronted him during the incident.
A man has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a teenage girl inside an Asda supermarket in Wakefield. West Yorkshire Police said officers were called to the store on Asdale Road at around 3.45pm on Thursday following reports of an assault in the kitchen aisle. A 28-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of sexual assault, and was also arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer. Police believe a woman who was shopping in the area at the time confronted the suspect following the alleged incident.
Police response and investigation
A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson confirmed officers attended the scene shortly after the alleged assault was reported, and that the man was detained there and then. Detectives are now working to establish the full circumstances of the incident and are keen to trace the female shopper who is said to have confronted the suspect, in order to assist with their enquiries.
