Arsenal have made a surprise approach to representatives of Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, according to reports, though Spurs remain unaware of the interest and have no intention of sanctioning any move that would send their captain across north London to their fiercest rivals.
Arsenal have reportedly made contact with representatives of Tottenham captain Cristian Romero to explore what it would take to sign the Argentina international this summer, as Mikel Arteta continues to weigh up defensive reinforcements. According to the Daily Mail, the Premier League champions’ approach came as a shock enquiry rather than a formal bid, with Atletico Madrid still considered favourites to land the 28-year-old. Tottenham are said to be unaware of Arsenal’s interest and have no intention of allowing their captain to leave for a rival club, a move that would likely provoke fury among their supporters.
Romero’s status at Tottenham
Romero joined Tottenham initially on loan from Atalanta in 2021, before the move was made permanent. He was appointed club captain ahead of the 2026-27 season, a decision that underlined his importance to Spurs both on and off the pitch. Tottenham have repeatedly stated that Romero is not for sale, and his long-term contract means the club are under no immediate pressure to enter negotiations over his future.
Since arriving in England, Romero has established himself as one of the world’s leading central defenders. He was part of Argentina’s victorious squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has also won the Copa América in both 2021 and 2024. Known for his aggressive, front-foot defending style, he has consistently ranked among the Premier League’s leaders for tackles, interceptions and duels won, though the same approach has also resulted in a notable number of yellow and red cards during his time in England.
Why any deal would be so sensitive
A direct transfer between Arsenal and Tottenham would be highly unusual given the intensity of the North London rivalry. The last major senior transfer to take place directly between the two clubs was Sol Campbell’s controversial free transfer from Spurs to Arsenal in 2001, a move that remains one of the most contentious in English football history. Any suggestion of Romero following a similar path would be expected to provoke a strong reaction among Tottenham fans, and the club would be highly unlikely to contemplate sanctioning such a switch.
Arsenal’s defensive options
Arsenal already possess considerable depth in central defence, with William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhães, Riccardo Calafiori, Jakub Kiwior and Jurrien Timber all currently part of Arteta’s squad. Despite this, the Spaniard is understood to have continued exploring options to further strengthen the position.
Under FIFA transfer regulations, clubs are permitted to speak with a player’s representatives in order to gauge interest in a potential move, though any actual transfer would still require the agreement of Tottenham, since Romero remains under contract at the club. No formal bid has been reported at this stage, with the enquiry understood to be an initial step to assess the feasibility of a deal rather than the opening of direct negotiations with Spurs.
Competition from Atletico Madrid
Despite Arsenal’s reported interest, Atletico Madrid remain the favourites to sign Romero should he leave Tottenham. The Argentine has been linked with the Spanish club across several recent transfer windows, with manager Diego Simeone said to admire both his combative playing style and his leadership qualities, attributes that align closely with the identity Simeone has built at Atletico.
