The NYPD says it was not involved in the incident in Marble Hill, while local media and eyewitnesses have named US Immigration and Customs Enforcement as the agency involved.
A man was shot during an encounter with federal law enforcement agents in New York at about 4pm local time on Thursday 8 October, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD). Local news outlets have reported that the agents were from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The man was taken to hospital and is conscious. Officials have not yet explained what led to the shooting.
What police have said
In a statement on X, the NYPD said there had been “a shooting involving federal law enforcement agents in the Marble Hill neighbourhood of the Bronx”. It said the force “was not involved in the incident and was not on scene at the time of the shooting”. The statement added that the individual who was shot was at a nearby hospital, “conscious and receiving medical attention”.
Marble Hill is geographically connected to the Bronx but is administratively part of Manhattan. Separate reporting indicated that the man’s injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, though a full medical update had not been released.
Reports of ICE involvement
The NYPD referred only to “federal law enforcement”, but local outlets reported that the shooting happened during an exchange between the man and ICE agents. ABC7 New York reported that city officials had been told ICE was using a nearby Target car park on 225th Street as a staging area.
A social media user who said they were at the scene reported seeing an ICE agent wearing an Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) vest, along with a number of masked federal agents arriving in the area. That account has not been independently verified.
The FBI reportedly attended the scene, with an FBI evidence-response team assisting the Department of Homeland Security. Authorities have not given a detailed account of the confrontation, why the man encountered federal agents or the circumstances in which the shot was fired.
Scrutiny of ICE
The incident comes after ICE agents were blamed for the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota earlier this year.
Separately, on Thursday, a leaked report raised questions about “shock gloves” that the agency plans to issue to its officers. Known as Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter devices, or G.L.O.V.E.s, they are intended to help officers control dangerous situations. According to the leaked report, a 2024 US Army study at Fort Leavenworth found that participants exposed to the devices experienced intense pain, stopped resisting immediately and feared being shocked again.
ICE leaders were reportedly aware of those findings before signing a $16.7m contract in August to buy 6,000 pairs of the gloves, along with associated equipment and services.
