The Lord of the Dance star shared the news of his wife’s death in an emotional Instagram post on Monday evening, describing Niamh as his “best friend” and asking fans to keep his family in their thoughts.
Michael Flatley has announced the death of his wife, Niamh, in a heartfelt statement shared on Instagram on Monday evening. The 68-year-old Lord of the Dance star, who married Niamh in 2006, asked fans and followers to keep his family in their prayers. Niamh, believed to be around 52, was herself an accomplished Irish dancer who had performed alongside Flatley in some of his most famous productions. No cause of death has been disclosed.
Flatley’s tribute
In his statement, Flatley wrote: “My heart is broken. I have lost my beautiful wife, Niamh, and my best friend. My gorgeous bride of twenty years has gone to the Lord in Heaven. She was the most loving mother, wife and person, and our lives will never be the same without her.” He went on to thank well-wishers for their support, adding: “Thank you for all the love and kindness you have shown us. Please keep Niamh, Michael St James, and our family in your thoughts and prayers.” The post was accompanied by a series of photographs of Niamh, including one from the couple’s wedding day. Friends have said Flatley has been left “distraught, devastated and utterly grief stricken” by her death.
A life in dance
Niamh O’Brien began Irish dancing at the age of three and went on to build her own professional career, performing in Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, Feet of Flames and Celtic Tiger. She was part of the original generation of dancers associated with the celebrated 1994 Riverdance performance during the Eurovision Song Contest interval, the seven-minute routine featuring Flatley and Jean Butler that became a global sensation and was later developed into a full stage show. It was on the set of Riverdance that Niamh first met Flatley, though the pair did not begin a romantic relationship until 2006. They married later that year in Fermoy, County Cork, and welcomed their son, Michael St James, in 2007.
A close and enduring partnership
The couple’s relationship remained close throughout their marriage. Speaking on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories on ITV in 2013, Flatley again described his wife as his “best friend,” saying: “She is highly intelligent. She is my best friend. She is extraordinarily beautiful, inside and out. I am proud to be her husband. I am blessed to have her. She is a loyal true blue.” In a 2025 interview, Flatley reportedly described Niamh as one of the most important things he had gained from his career, and said he could not recall the couple ever having serious arguments during their marriage.
Niamh played a particularly significant role in supporting Flatley through his diagnosis with an aggressive form of cancer in 2023, after which he later said he was in remission. Speaking to the Irish Independent last year, Flatley recalled a moment during his treatment when he saw Niamh by his hospital bed despite being in severe pain. “I was haemorrhaging and convulsing on a hospital bed and I kept passing out. They couldn’t give me the painkillers necessary,” he said. “There were some wonderful nurses that were trying to help me, but they were invisible to me because of the pain, but I will never forget opening my eyes one of the times that I came to, and my wife was there. And my wife was smiling. Can you imagine the courage from my wife, to put on a smile in that position? The courage that took?”
Family life
The couple’s son, Michael St James, has largely grown up away from public attention. Flatley said in late 2025 that his son had begun studying mathematics and computer science at university. The family has long been associated with Castlehyde House in County Cork, a property Flatley purchased in 1999 and spent many years restoring.
No further details have yet been made public regarding when or where Niamh died, the cause of her death, or any funeral arrangements.
