A 32-year-old man has been arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon after social media videos appeared to show him punching a woman on a Charlotte sidewalk, with police saying the footage may also link him to further incidents under investigation.
A 32-year-old man has been charged with assault after being seen in multiple social media videos appearing to punch a woman in Charlotte’s South End district. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said they arrested Di-Quan Schafar Hunt at around 7:30pm on Thursday, 6 August, following an investigation into footage that appeared to show him assaulting or harassing several people. Officers said the woman involved in the alleged attack suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Hunt has since been charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
How the investigation began
According to police, officers were called to an area off East 4th Street in Uptown Charlotte on Thursday in response to an unrelated matter. On arrival, they were shown a social media account containing multiple videos that police said they were already investigating. Charlotte’s South End is one of the city’s busiest entertainment and nightlife districts, with particularly high pedestrian footfall during evenings and weekends, which police say formed the backdrop to one of the alleged incidents captured on video.
The alleged assault
One of the videos reviewed by police showed an alleged assault reported on 30 July. The footage appeared to show Hunt punching a woman on a sidewalk off East Boulevard in Charlotte’s South End before running away. Detectives said the woman suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries as a result. Police have said there is no indication the woman and Hunt knew each other, and detectives believe the attack may have been random, though it remains unclear precisely why the alleged assault occurred.
In the video, Hunt can reportedly be heard telling a woman passing by, “don’t wave to me,” before appearing to hit her. He can then reportedly be seen standing over her, shouting and asking, “you still talking?”
Charges and custody
Hunt was taken to a local medical facility for treatment following his arrest. He is due to be transferred into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office once he is released, where he will face the charge of assault with a deadly weapon. Although the video appears to show Hunt using his fists rather than a weapon, North Carolina law allows hands or fists to be classified as a deadly weapon depending on how they are used and the severity of the injuries caused.
A lengthy arrest history
Court records reviewed by police show Hunt has been arrested at least nine times between October 2023 and December 2025. His previous charges include assault with a deadly weapon, communicating threats, assault on a female, and violating domestic violence protective orders.
Ongoing investigation
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said they are continuing to investigate whether Hunt may be connected to additional incidents shown in the videos circulating online. Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the alleged assaults, or who has further video footage relevant to the case, to come forward and contact the department as their enquiries continue.
