Chelsea have completed the signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton on a two-year contract, bringing the 35-year-old former England striker’s six-year spell at the Seagulls to a close as Alonso’s side continue reshaping their squad during pre-season.
Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton on a two-year deal, ending the 35-year-old former England international’s six-year association with the Seagulls on undisclosed terms. The move comes as Jordan Henderson, 36, also prepares to join Chelsea after cancelling his contract at Brentford. Welbeck, who scored 13 Premier League goals last season, is expected to link up with his new teammates during their pre-season tour, which continues in Hong Kong before moving on to Malaysia and Indonesia.
The end of an era at Brighton
Confirming his departure, Brighton posted on social media platform X, thanking Welbeck “for everything,” and described his six years at the club as a successful and memorable spell that has now come to an end. Welbeck had 12 months remaining on his contract at the Amex Stadium at the time of the move. Over his time on the south coast, he became one of Brighton’s longest-serving senior players and played a part in helping the club qualify for European competition.
A well-travelled career
Welbeck began his professional career at Manchester United, making his first-team debut in 2008, before later playing for Arsenal, Watford and, most recently, Brighton. Across his club career he has made well over 500 senior appearances and scored more than 100 competitive goals. At international level, he earned 42 caps for England, scoring 16 goals, and represented his country at both the 2014 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012.
Although injuries disrupted several seasons over the years, Welbeck rebuilt his form at Brighton, establishing himself as one of the club’s most experienced players and a respected figure in the dressing room. His return of 13 Premier League goals last season ranks among the best single-season tallies of his career. His move to Chelsea also marks a first taste of west London football, having spent his entire Premier League career to date with Manchester United, Arsenal, Watford and Brighton.
Adding experience to a young squad
Chelsea’s decision to sign Welbeck is expected to bring added experience, leadership and tactical depth to a squad that has become one of the youngest in the Premier League in recent seasons. He is capable of playing as a central striker, in a second-striker role, or out on either wing, giving the coaching staff additional flexibility. Jordan Henderson’s expected arrival is likely to reinforce that same aim; the former Liverpool captain brings with him experience of the Premier League, the Champions League and major international tournaments. Taken together, the two signings continue Chelsea’s approach of pairing high-profile young talent with experienced professionals in an effort to balance long-term squad development with immediate competitiveness.
Wider transfer activity
Welbeck’s arrival follows a busy period of transfer business for Chelsea. Manager Alonso had initially targeted Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, 33, only for Sunderland to decline to sell him, while the club also considered free agent John Stones, 32. Elsewhere, Chelsea have confirmed the signing of 26-year-old defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52 million, and 24-year-old Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million.
A reshuffle expected up front
Welbeck’s signing is likely to trigger further changes to Chelsea’s forward line. Alonso currently has Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu and Joao Pedro among his striking options, and at least two of that group, possibly three, are expected to be sold or loaned out before the transfer window closes. Joao Pedro appears to be the exception, with transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting on Saturday that the Brazilian is set to sign a new long-term contract with the club in the coming days. Joao Pedro underlined his value with a nine-minute hat-trick in Chelsea’s 6-4 pre-season friendly win over Western Sydney Wanderers, coming on alongside the club’s senior “A team” players. Delap, by contrast, struggled during the same match while featuring mainly alongside academy prospects.
Pre-season continues
Alonso’s squad are currently in Sydney, Australia, as part of their pre-season schedule, having lost 2-1 to Tottenham earlier on the day Welbeck’s move was announced. The squad are set to travel to Hong Kong this weekend, where Welbeck and Henderson are both expected to link up with their new teammates, before the tour continues on to Malaysia and Indonesia.
