Police are investigating whether a 21-year-old woman charged with two murders claimed additional victims after discovering she posted social media selfies with “follow me” and “DM for follow back” hashtags on the day her second alleged victim died.
The woman, identified only by her surname Kim, faces two counts of murder after men in their twenties died under similar circumstances at Seoul motels on 28 January and 9 February. Authorities arrested her on 11 February following the deaths.
Mobile phone evidence revealed Kim allegedly asked ChatGPT: “What happens if you take sleeping pills with alcohol?” She also questioned how much of the toxic combination would be “dangerous” and “could someone die?” A police source stated: “She asked these questions several times and received answers, so she was fully aware that combining alcohol and drugs could be fatal.”
Post-mortem examinations found large quantities of different drugs in both bodies. During questioning Kim admitted to spiking the men’s drinks with benzodiazepine-containing sedatives but denied any intent to kill them.
Investigators believe Kim’s social media activity suggests she may have been seeking additional victims. On the day her second victim died, she posted a selfie captioned with hashtags including “follow me,” “follow back” and “DM for follow back.” Police are now working to determine if she made contact with other potential targets through social media.
Authorities revealed Kim had previously attempted to kill her ex-boyfriend in December last year. She allegedly spiked his drink with sedatives in a café car park in Namyangju, South Korea, causing him to fall unconscious for two days. When he regained consciousness, he reported the incident.
Investigators believe that after her first failed attempt on the ex-boyfriend, Kim researched her method using ChatGPT and increased the doses in her subsequent attacks. The first alleged murder occurred after Kim checked into a Seoul motel with a man in his twenties on 28 January. She left after two hours and the man was found dead the following day.
On 9 February, she checked into another motel with another man in his twenties who died under similar circumstances. The pattern of checking into motels for short periods before victims were found dead raised immediate suspicion amongst investigators.
Local media reports Kim has a history of mental health treatment. Police are awaiting the results of a psychopathy assessment whilst investigating whether there were other victims beyond the two confirmed deaths and the failed attempt on her ex-boyfriend.
