Tyrrell Hatton admitted he could feel every pound of his Christmas indulgence during the opening round of the Dubai Desert Classic, comparing his movement on the course to an ocean liner after revealing his weight had climbed from just under 190 pounds to 204 pounds.
The Englishman, who stands five foot eight, described the gain as “pretty aggressive” and said his backswing had suffered noticeably in the windy conditions.
Hatton made no attempt to disguise the cause. He confirmed he had completed “zero cardio and a lot of drinking” during December, with minimal training. A Guinness tap installed at his home had proved particularly “enjoyable.”
His playing partner Rory McIlroy was said to be “horrified” when Hatton disclosed the extent of his weight gain since the pair lifted the Ryder Cup together in September.
Despite expectations of tension following McIlroy’s recent public comments that LIV golfers should pay outstanding fines to demonstrate commitment to future Ryder Cup teams, the atmosphere between the European teammates appeared relaxed.
Hatton said the pair had not discussed the fines issue at all. Instead, conversation centred on their respective wine selections over Christmas, with Hatton conceding that McIlroy’s choices had been superior.
The 33-year-old acknowledged it was time to address the excess weight now that 2026 had begun. Having completed Dry January the previous year, he admitted he had missed the chance to repeat it and was instead attempting what he called “Damp January.”
Hatton carded a two under par 70, finishing three shots clear of McIlroy. He said he felt “rusty” but was satisfied to finish under par given his condition.
On McIlroy’s public remarks regarding LIV fines — which could total nearly £1 million annually for golfers competing in events clashing with DP World Tour dates — Hatton said he saw no need to address the matter on course.
He expressed hope a resolution would be reached soon.
Francesco Molinari claimed the surprise first-round lead with a seven under par 65.
