Multiple people have been left injured following a stabbing on Bridge Road in the Alum Rock area of Birmingham, with the attack taking place directly outside a primary school and a church as armed officers, air ambulance crews and multiple emergency units rushed to the scene.
The incident unfolded outside Our Lady of the Rosary and St Therese of Lisieux church, with a victim reported to be lying in the street as officers performed CPR. Rosary Catholic Primary School, situated adjacent to the scene, was placed into lockdown as the emergency response got underway, with large numbers of ambulances attending to those injured in the surrounding area.
Witnesses described deeply disturbing scenes in the moments surrounding the attack. One account told of a woman screaming from an upstairs window with blood visibly on her hands, while another witness reported that a passer-by had attempted to use their vehicle to intervene as the attacker repeatedly stabbed a victim in the street.
A 32-year-old man was subsequently arrested in connection with the stabbing and remains in police custody. A woman also sustained injuries during the incident, though these are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.
A West Midlands Police spokesman confirmed officers were called to Bridge Road at 12.06pm following reports of a serious stabbing, with firearms officers deployed as part of the response. Detective Superintendent James Munro said: “We believe this to be a contained incident with a man in custody. We are reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to a number of people in the area. We understand how deeply distressing and concerning this incident is and we will have extra officers in the area to offer reassurance to the community.”
The area falls within the Birmingham Ladywood constituency, represented by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood. The school, church, local ambulance service and the Home Office have all been contacted for comment.
